off-court showdown between the team and a firm owned by Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart.
Gina Rinehart, the mining heiress is one of the biggest private investors in Australian sports. She had promised Netball Australia (NA) A $15m, which was probably announced last month. Netball Australia (NA) really needed the money, as for the $11m in debt.
In return, the logo of the company will feature on the diamond’s uniform, that’s what was announced last month.
Hancock Prospecting said that the partnership which was supposed to help the diamonds remain one of the world’s most dominant sporting teams would regrettably not go ahead.
Although it has not been made public yet, it is reported that Wallam, the squad’s only Aboriginal player is known to have told her teammates that she was uncomfortable wearing the logo.
It’s said that she was particularly concerned about the racist comments once made by the Hancock Prospecting’s founder – Lang Hancock.
Recently, the mining Industry has also been accused of exploiting Aboriginal Communities land and goodwill, although it’s yet not clear if Donnell Wallam discussed this.
Reportedly, Ms. Wallam’s teammates refused to wear the logo, in solidarity with her.
They seem to also be concerned about climate changes too. Hancock Prospecting is a fossil fuels supplier.
After this dispute, some of the people praised the players while others didn’t agree with this.some said that it is not okay to ask Ms. Rinehart took responsibility for the words of her father.
NA also received some criticism regarding how they should have discussed with the players about it before signing the deal.
Diamonds captain Liz Watson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation “We’re great supporters of Hancock, we want to make this partnership work with them,”(ABC) on Tuesday.
