After defeat, Rishi Sunak confirmed his candidature comeback for Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, noting, the state is going through a ‘profound economic crisis’. Just the previous week Lizz Truss resigned as UK’s PM amid political and economic turmoil.
Sunak while making the official announcement on October 23, further highlighted that he looks forward to fixing the economy, bringing it back on track.
“The United Kingdom is a great nation but we face a profound economic crisis. That is why I am standing to be Leader of the Conservative Party & your next Prime Minister. I want to fix our economy, unite our Party & deliver for our country. I served as your Chancellor, assisting to steer our economy through the toughest of times”.
The reports show Sunak as the top contender for the position. Conservative Party’s Boris Johnson, Penny Mordaunt and Sunak are the three candidates running ahead in the race for Prime Minister. Though, Boris Johnson hasn’t officially made the announcement of the same.
Conservative Party’s Lizz Truss failed to keep up with Britain’s expectations which resulted in her power drop and resignation, holding the post for just 44 days. Now it is to see who gets to become the 5th Prime Minister of the UK (in the last 6 years). The country indeed requires leadership which will get it out of the economic crisis.
Many of the experts firmly believe that Brexit was one of the wrong decisions which Britain made and at present paying price for it. The country is heading into general elections in December 2024.
Borris Johnson or Rishi Sunak ?
Today, while speaking with CNN News 18, Lord Meghnad Desai – House of Lords speaking on the political scene of the UK, said many people are in favour of bringing Johnson back, and called Sunak an ‘inexperienced politician’.
“Rishi Sunak has not been enough into politics to be a Politician and has less experience. A lot of people want Boris Johnson. It is better if he comes back. He is a professional”.

In case if there is one potential candidate who gets more than 100 nominations from the councilmen by October 24, then he/she will be announced as the new leader. On the other hand, following the current scenario this might not be possible, as both Sunak and Johnson managed to get over 100 nominations, the fresh reports shows. And if Mordaunt also manages to get the same support then MPs of the Conservative Party will vote and dismiss the candidature of one individual (precisely of the one with less votes or vote as per their preference).
The MPs will then be voting online when there will be two remaining candidates, who will also go for a political debate before the voting closes.

Sunak today officially got the support of Suella Braverman, who backed him noting, “Things required to change. We – as a party, need to change. We need to provide leadership, stability & confidence to the people of Britain. We can’t indulge in parochial or nativist fantasies”.
“Yes, I want a leader of our – Conservative Party & our nation to inspire hope for a better future & raise our spirits. And I need a leader who will put our house in order and apply a steady, careful hand on the tiller. That person, for me, is – Rishi Sunak”.
She then added, “We are in a fundamentally different world to 2019. What the nation needs above all now is stability. Until recently, the Conservatives had an unassailable record on their ability to govern wisely in – difficult economic times. We must rebuild that reputation, our party’s future depends on it & our country expects it”.
Braverman previously was in favour of Truss during Lizz vs Sunak in previous voting. It was also predicted that she might also stand to be the next Prime Minister of the UK. According to the BBC, Sunak holds the support of 128 Conservative lawmakers.
