Russia has declined to take part in the International Court of Justice hearing on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
In response to Ukraine’s appeal for its judges to force Russia to suspend its military operations in Ukraine, the International Court of Justice is holding two days of hearings at its headquarters, the Peace Palace in Hague.
On Monday morning, Ukraine is expected to present it’s point of views and Russia will be having the opportunity to respond on Tuesday.
The International Court of Justice has decided to hold a blended session on the 12th day of the Russian assault of Ukraine due to the current circumstances.
Ukraine’s point of view
“We are in this building called the Peace Palace, while my country faces aggression. We see the aggression of Russian bombs and missiles. Millions of people are in imminent danger. Russia’s assault on Ukraine has resulted in 1.5 million people to flee from the country and many more are internally displaced.” The Ukrainian representative in the ICJ remarked.
“We can no longer provide state services to our citizens including medical services. This is not the first time we have experienced Russia’s disrespect for international law first hand. Now the
world understands Russia’s disrespect and hate for humanity.” Ukraine asserted while presenting its case in court.
Kiev alleged in the ICJ that Russia is using disinformation to justify its military assault on Ukraine. Earlier, Moscow claimed that the reason for the special military operation was the genocide of locals by the Ukrainian army in the Donbass region of Eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine informed the Court that nearly 2 million people are forced to flee their homeland due to unprovoked assault from Moscow.
While presenting his views in the peace palace, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, “How many more deaths are needed for you to secure our sky?” We are waiting for this decision, either (for you to do it) with the force you have or to provide us with planes and anti-aircraft systems that will give us the strength to do it.”
The ICJ hearing on the Russian invasion of Ukraine is underway. On Sunday, Zelenskiy announced that Kyiv has filed a suit in apex international court against Russian aggression.
