The Assembly Elections of 2022 brought big scores for BJP in four states, while AAP sweeps away its contenders including the ruling Congress in Punjab. The poll results disappoint the grand, old Congress all over again.
Punjab: New Chief Minister and Ruling party
Punjab now has a new Chief Minister and the ruling party in its history of ruling parties as Aam Admi Party(AAP) gains a landslide victory keeping on par with the exit polls. Bhagwant Singh Mann is ready to be the new chief minister of the state.
AAP came to contend in the election this time after filling all the prevailing strategy gaps from 2017, the most crucial one being the announcement of the chief ministerial candidate- Bhagwant Singh Mann, a true blue Jatt Sikh ready to sweep the Jatt Sikhs’ vote in his favour.
During the 2017 campaign, a video of an inebriated Bhagwant Singh surfaced on the internet and AAP went to election without a CM face. Singh triumphed over alcoholism in 2019 and is now fully sober.
Chiranjit Singh Channi not only had to contest against opposing parties in the election but also had to compete with rival Navjot Singh Sidhu, the party’s state chief to appear as the chief ministerial candidate. Although Channi managed to appear as the CM face the incumbent CM lost in both the seats he contested.
Goa’s political colour remains orange
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) and the main opposition Congress were the prime contenders for this year’s intense multi-cornered battle in the Assembly Election of Goa. Congress gave a good fight to the ruling party and secured 11 seats.
The ruling party won reaching the halfway mark of 20 seats, just shy of gaining a majority. BJP is set to form the government with the support of three independent candidates.
Pramod Sawant will once again return as the Chief Minister of the state as his party secured the support of the three independent candidates Antonio Vas, Chandrakant Shetye and Alex Reginald. Pramod Sawant contested from the Sanquelim seat. He had previously emerged victorious from this seat twice with no former political experience.
By profession a doctor, Sawant has been previously associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS). Sawant kept his Sanquelim constituency secured from his Congress opposition Dharmesh Salgani by a mere margin of 600 votes.
The AAP had recently made headlines in Goa as its chief ministerial candidate Amit Palekar went on a hunger strike in protest against illegal construction at an old heritage site in the coastal area. But, the party could not fair much in the election only securing 2 seats.
It is said the road to Delhi goes through Lucknow
Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP scored well in what some may believe to be the semi-finals as the party maintain its stronghold in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh. Yogi Adityanath is set to return for his second tenure as the chief minister with an unparalleled victory securing 255 seats well and truly crossing the magic figure.
Yogi fought from his stronghold Gorakhpur constituency and won by a huge margin. 1,02,062 votes were polled in his favour. The BJP left no stones unturned in its campaign in favour of Yogi Adityanath with a large number of rallies along with the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi campaigning in his favour.
Yogi has been a member of the Parliament for five straight terms previously; he is also the first chief minister who will return for a second consecutive as the chief minister of UP in almost four decades. Uttar Pradesh will also have an MLA as the chief minister for the first time in 15 years.
Samajwadi Party under Akhilesh Yadav emerged as the leading opposition securing 111 seats.
Uttarakhand and Manipur’s verdict in favour of BJP
In the last five years, the position of chief minister of Uttarakhand has been filled by as many as three names with BJP as the ruling party. Pushkar Singh Dhami had a tough battle to fight ahead of him to keep BJP as the ruling party in the state.
He went to election after a mere though positive tenure of six complete months against the Congress’ seasoned player, Harish Rawat. Securing 47 seats, BJP keeps its hold on Uttarakhand intact.
But, in a surprising outcome, the six-month veteran chief minister Dhami lost to his Congress opponent Bhuwan Chandra Kapri by as large a margin as 6500 plus votes in the Khatima seat.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh led BJP’s winning race in Manipur with a spectacular win in the Heingang constituency. 24,814 votes were polled in his favour.
