What is Naturopathy?
Ankit Tiwari, Chief Medical Officer at The Meadow Nature Cure, a wellness center in Gujarat, said “Naturopathy is an alternative system of medicine which works on the basis of primary health care system that enhances the body’s mechanism to heal by itself.”

To explain the concept of Naturopathy, Mr. Tiwari further explained that it “works on treating the body as a whole on the basis of physical level, mental level, emotional level, spiritual levels as well as intellectual level.”

When asked professional yoga practitioner and expert, Rajneesh Tomar how yoga and naturopathy were interrelated, he said, “Yoga and Naturopathy run parallel to each other. Yoga is a science that works on the internal aspect of the human body. As a form of workout, it is for the betterment of bone strength, muscle endurance, correct breathing practices, and maintaining the growth of the tissues.”
“Naturopathy”, on the other hand, he continued, “works on the improving blood circulation, regeneration of cells, maintaining hormonal balance through techniques like body massage among multiple others.”

According to naturopaths, the body can only be healed by getting rid of an excessive accumulation of unhealthy materials. The treatment processes are focused on psychological as well as physical well-being.
For wholesome healing, interesting combinations of doing yoga, consuming a balanced diet, massage and mud therapy, conscious bathing, acupuncture, and acupressure are prescribed to the patients.
When it comes to treating lifestyle diseases like diabetes and blood pressure, naturopathy has proven to be extremely beneficial:
- Food and Diet: According to the website of the Ministry of AYUSH, Naturopathy believes that “food is the only medicine” and “no external medications are used.”
Generally, the3 main types of diet are Eliminative, Soothing, and Destructive. Naturopaths believe that a diet must not include more than 20% acidic foods and more than 80% alkaline foods. Including fibre-rich vegetables in the diet to keep the bowel movement on track and also avoiding alternate sweeteners like stevia is a must.
- Diet modifications: According to Dr. Ranbir Singh, a naturopathy doctor who has been practicing for more than 20 years said, “When it comes to lifestyle diseases like diabetes, we focus on weight loss by prescribing a balanced diet. We usually recommend including natural sugars in the form of dry fruits and fructose. A good combination would be having almonds soaked overnight with karanjh.”
- When asked about any modifications that are recommended in a person’s habits, Dr. Singh said, “When it comes to patients who are suffering from problems like blood pressure and diabetes, we tell them to simply get rid of white salt and white sugar. A complete transformation of habits in the daily routine is recommended.”
- Nevertheless, Dr. Singh added that “We can only manage controlling lifestyle diseases like blood pressure and sugar levels; full recovery is not really possible because there is no permanent cure. We can lessen a body’s reliance on pharmaceutical medications by offering alternatives to artificial sweeteners, such as dates and jaggery”.
- Balancing hormones: “Naturopathy works on balancing enzymes and hormones as the balance maintenance is vital for optimum functioning of all organs and the systems in the body.” said Dr. Tiwari.
He further explained that “lifestyle disorders are caused due to sedentary habits. As a naturopath, the duty is to correct and gift the patient with a disciplined life through therapies and principles.”
- Practising yoga: While shedding light on the relation between yoga and naturopathy, Dr. Tiwari said, “We relate and study yoga with knowing the physiological as well as pathological conditions.” Therapeutic yoga is also an essential part of the discipline of naturopathy, but because of “pathological conditions and contraindications, we do not recommend all yogic postures” to anyone and everyone.
