After several weeks of controversy during which Shakib AL Hasan was given the choice of continuing to represent Bangladesh as a player or keeping his endorsement with “betting company” Betwinner News, the BCB officially made the announcement.
Shakib Al Hasan, a premier all-rounder, was named captain of the T20 side by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday in preparation for the following Asia Cup, the New Zealand tri-series, and the T20 World Cup. Australia will host the T20 World cup in October-November, while the Asia Cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates.
On August 13th, the BCB issued a statement, putting an end to the uncertainty of the last few weeks when Shakib Al Hasan was given the choice of playing for Bangladesh or maintaining his endorsement with a “betting company.” Shakib Al Hasan has properly terminated his agreement with Betwinner News. It is believed that he will be requested to continue in the format as a long-term captain. After Mominul Haque resigned as Test captain in June, he was named in his place.
With Liton Das unable to compete in the Asia Cup due to injuries, Bangladesh made a number of changes to their T20I lineup. Sabbir Rahman, a middle-order batsman who last played in a T20I in 2019, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who was rested for the T20I series against Zimbabwe, are both back in the squad. Shoriful Islam, Munim Shahriar, and Najmul Hossain Shanto had no place on the team.
Fast bowler Ebadot Hossain also gets a place, along with all-arounder Mohammad Saifuddin, whose recurring shoulder problem is also a concern. Despite having a finger injury, BCB announced that they were expecting an update on Nurul Hasan on August 21.
While the board resolved the Shakib sponsorship issue, Bangladesh had missed the very first deadline for announcing the Asia Cup team. Along with Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and a qualifier, six teams will compete in the Asia Cup main round. The qualifying tournament, which begins on August 20, will reveal the qualifier’s identity.
Before being sidelined by a fractured finger, Nurul had replaced long-time white-ball captain Mahmudullah in T20Is during Bangladesh’s previous tour, which was in Zimbabwe. The final of three T20Is, which Bangladesh lost 2-1 in Zimbabwe, were captained by Mosaddek Hossain.
Bangladesh’s Asia Cup squad: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, Nurul Hasan, Taskin Ahmed
