Shubman Gill and his sister, Shahneel, were abused on Twitter and Instagram following Gujrat Titan’s win over Royal Challengers Bangalore. The abusers were supporters frustrated by RCB’s loss.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were beaten by Gujarat Titans (GT) in a closely contested match on Sunday at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Due to their disappointment with the game’s conclusion, some RCB supporters lost their composure and started harassing Shubhman Gill and his sister on social media. Many of them continued to threaten people with rape and death.
Social media abuse against Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill, the leadoff batsman for the Gujarat Titans, extended his streak of 100-plus runs in the Indian Premier League 2024 on Sunday. The Titans won the match once more because of Gill’s century, but Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore were eliminated as a result.
Wins and losses are a part of sports, but some supporters weren’t happy about RCB’s defeat and started to criticise Gill online. Some supporters specifically targeted Gill’s sister, Shahneel, for an Instagram post she made following the match.
Shahneel posted a couple images from the match along with an Instagram post discussing the “wholesome” day. On the post, other admirers left derogatory remarks for Shahneel and Shubman.
In an effort to expose her to Shahneel Gill’s troll army, several RCB supporters released his Instagram connection. As was to be expected, hateful statements regarding her sexual orientation and prayers for her brother’s murder inundated the comments section of her Instagram photos.
Following the derogatory remarks about Gill and his sister, numerous fans criticised the abusers on Twitter.
Praise for Shubman Gill’s performance
On Sunday, May 21, Shubman Gill stole the show as his stunning 104-run innings propelled GT to a crushing six-wicket victory over RCB in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The Faf du Plessis-led team’s elimination from the competition was sealed by GT’s victory, which not only brought them to 20 points but also increased their point total. In a game where the outcome was on the line for RCB against GT, Gill’s masterful performance eliminated them from the competition and allowed the Mumbai Indians to advance.
There was zero enmity between Gill and Virat Kohli as a result of the outcome, even though some supporters weren’t happy to see Gill end RCB’s season in the 16th T20 league. In fact, Kohli hugged Gill after the game to acknowledge his hit.
In the post-match presentation ceremony, even GT captain Hardik Pandya was all praise for Gill, saying that it was a different Shubman Gill who performed in the game. He continued by saying that the choices he made made him very special and gave the other batter confidence.
With better bowling, GT would have taken 197 runs at the outset, according to Pandya, who also commended Kohli for a remarkable knock.
Shubman Gill acknowledged that he was in good form after the match. He continued by saying that he had missed out on the big ones throughout the first half of the IPL. He was grateful that everything was going well for him in the IPL. Further adding that one must maintain belief and intent.
What GT’s win means for the IPL
On Sunday’s penultimate day of the league round of the IPL 2024, both the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore were vying for the final available position in the playoffs. While the Mumbai Indians improved their hopes of making the playoffs by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the first match of the doubleheader on Sunday, RCB faltered against GT despite a brave performance by Kohli.
The first qualifier will now be played on Tuesday, May 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai between Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. On May 24, the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants will square off in the elimination round. The winner of the first qualifier advances to the final, and the loser advances to the second qualifier, where they will compete against the winner of the eliminator.
