India won the ODI series 3-0 in the West Indies. Indian opener Shubman Gill became the man of the series by playing innings of 64, 43, and unbeaten 98 runs in three matches. Stand-in captain Dhawan is seeing Rohit Sharma’s shadow in this 22-year-old opener.
Dhawan said “Shubman Gill has got a bit of a Rohit touch”
On Wednesday, India finished off a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan, who captained a team with little previous experience.
Rohit Sharma was not in the ODI series against West Indies. However, a young opener from India has made up for the lack of one of the best batsmen on the Indian team.
Rohit Sharma-led team India will now face West Indies in a five-match Twenty20 series, starting from July 29 in Trinidad.
Dhawan said after the game, “He (Gill) has got very good technique and he is a very classy player. I think he has got a bit of a Rohit touch in him. He seems to have a lot of time the way he bats. Good to see that he scored 98 today (Wednesday). He knew how to convert those fifties into 90s,”
For his sensational display in the three-match series, the Punjab-based cricketer won the Player of the Series award. He amassed a total of 205 runs at an average of 102.50 in the series.
With Dhawan not getting any younger and the likes of KL Rahul not being able to secure a regular spot in the ODI team as an opening batter, Gill has raised his hand for selection as well and going forward, he will also be in the reckoning for a spot in the team.
Dhawan Glorified the Indian bowling attack
Dhawan also praised the young bowling attack of India. Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna handled the absence of experienced stars like Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami very well.
Dhawan said, ”Siraj is a quality bowler. His self-belief has increased a lot. He knows what he has to do. He backs himself. So as a captain it becomes easy for me. It feels good to see as a skipper that the boys know what to do, they know their responsibilities.”
Shikhar Dhawan emphasized how strong local systems, such as the IPL, have exposed players to intense circumstances so they can now reproduce those responses on the international level.
“The boys are acting in fairly mature and sensible ways for their young age. They do a good job of handling the pressure. The transition to international cricket becomes pretty simple because of our domestic cricket and the IPL because of that exposure. “Congratulations to the boys,” They have been pretty realistic and disciplined, “said Dhawan.
Dhawan enter his name into a history book
Dhawan became the first Indian skipper to lead the Asian giants to a series whitewash of the West Indies in the Caribbean. Dhawan entered his name into the history books when Team India defeated the West Indies in the third and final ODI of the bilateral series.
The veteran opener captained Team India in the absence of all-format captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain KL Rahul. Dhawan-led Team India thrashed the Men from the Caribbean 3-0 in the recently concluded ODI series. Averaging 56.00, Dhawan smashed 166 runs in the white-ball series against the former world champions.
Former Indian cricketer Sodhi spoke at length about Dhawan’s performances for India in the West Indies series.
“We need him (Dhawan) if we talk about the 50-over World Cup. But why not Shikhar Dhawan for the T20 World Cup, why not an experienced player, the sort of form that is being seen, the way his feet are moving, the fantastic fielding he is doing, Shikhar has presented an extremely strong case,” Sodhi said.
On other hand, India swept West Indies in a three-match series at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain on Wednesday.
