To celebrate India-UK Educational ties, 75 young Indian achievers who have studied in the UK were felicitated with the awards, in an initiative by the NISAU in partnership with the British Council in India.
The National Indian Student and Alumni Union, UK (NISAU), recently announced the winners of its India-UK Achievers awards. The list also comprised six Indian Lawyers for their exceptional contributions to the field of Law.
The awards were distributed on the occasion of 75 years of India’s independence and the educational ties between India and the United Kingdom. 75 young Indian achievers who studied in the UK were honored as a part of this initiative by NISAU in partnership with the British Council in India and were supported by the UK Government Department for International Trade.
The list of the winners under the Lawyers category features the following names:
1. Menaka Guruswamy is a Senior Advocate, who is practicing in the Supreme Court of India. The NISAU noted her remarkable role in several landmark cases. She was also recognized by TIME 100 magazine and was featured in their list as one of the most influential people in the world for her work in leading the successful historic battle for the Rights of the LGBTQ Community in India. She was awarded the title of an ‘Outstanding achiever in the category of ‘Law.’
2. Arghya Sengupta is the Founder and Research Director at a national policy think-tank named Vidhi. He has specialization in constitutional law and regulation of the digital economy. He has served on various government committees including the B.N. Srikrishna-led committee of experts on a data protection framework for India. He is also the author of ‘Independence and Accountability of the Indian Higher Judiciary.’
3. Dr. Chintan Chandrachud joined the chambers in July 2021. He is developing a wide array of practices, covering commercial litigation, arbitration, tax litigation, and public law litigation. His notable representations included working for a Ukrainian commercial bank in PCA arbitration proceedings under the Russia-Ukraine Bilateral Investment Treaty, and many other achievements. He was listed by Chambers & Partners as an “associate to watch”, and by Legal 500 as a “key lawyer”, for tax litigation. He is a barrister at Brick Court Chambers, London, and the author of ‘The cases that India Forgot’ and ‘Balanced Constitutionalism: Courts and Legislatures in India and the United Kingdom.’
4. Gunjan Singh, an Indian Attorney is working as the Director (Litigation) at Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), Delhi, where, other than litigation he also mentors budding lawyers and interns. He specializes in the field of labor and employment laws and has been actively working alongside several civil societies. Mr. Singh was awarded the Chevening Scholarship 2017-2018 to study LL.M in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and has completed BA LLB (Hons.) from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India and Master’s in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India.
5. Krishna Omkar, a corporate lawyer by background, has been recognized by the NISAU for quarterbacking some of the most complex and high-value M&A deals of recent years, spanning more than 60 jurisdictions and USD 200 Billion+ in total value. He is also a globally recognized thought leader on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Krishna is using his background in law, philosophy, and social sciences to situate stakeholder capitalism and thought on environmental, social, and governance issues within the narrative of fiduciary duty, positing a business model that harnesses the power of inclusion, empowerment, and social change as a strategy for long-term sustainable profitability, intending to do “Better Business for Greater Good”.
6. Shreeyash Uday Lalit, an advocate practicing in the Supreme court of India, various High Courts, and other Courts. After pursuing his LL. B Degree from Delhi University, he further went on to pursue his LL.M from the University of Cambridge in 2017-28, as a Tata Trust, Narottam Sekhsaria, Trust, and Pegasus Scholar.
These Achievers Honours seek to recognize and celebrate all the contributions made by the UK’s Indian Alumni and students in their fields and expertise. The award celebration was held in Central London on the eve of India’s Republic Day.
