The PGA Tour Pros are currently stationed at the East Lake Golf Course participating in the final event of the FedEx playoffs, in the absence of Tiger Woods. With only a 30-mn playing field, it is natural for the competition to surge high and produce some exhilarating results.
One such outcome has been produced by the American star, Collin Morikawa as he registers his name alongside the golf legend Tiger Woods. While the 26-year-old hasn’t had an ideal year so far and produced average performances on the greens, his recent endeavors in Atlanta have once again vouched for the exceptional skills he holds.
Collin Morikawa takes over Tiger Woods record
The first two days of the Tour Championship have concluded and the cuts have been applied. On one hand, many golfers have been cruising the greens with slight struggle. On the other hand, Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa have proved their dominance.
Currently, both the professionals hold a whopping 16 under par score as they are tied for the first berth. Focusing more on Collin Morikawa, his rounds witnessed spectacular rounds of 61 and 64.
While the figures in themselves were staggering, it were the perks accompanied that made the achievement even more appealing. That is, the golf icon with his scorecard on Friday broke the 127 points record set by Tiger Woods after his first two days at the Tour Championship.
Additionally, Morikawa is the only player to hold bogey free rounds through 36 holes.
The brilliant 61 conceded by Morikawa
Interesting, the splendid 61 came as an accomplishment in itself. Thanks to the victory of the Norwegian golfer, Viktor Hovland, last week, fans have started calling those rounds of 61 an exclusive club.
And Morikawa, accomplishing the same, registered his name among some great players. On top of the list being the co-leader of the tournament, Hovland as he secured 9 under par.
Morikawa reflects on his thoughts post his record-setting round
During one of the press conferences post his game, the American golf star opened up about his feelings related to his round. Concerning his 16 under par, Morikawa said that if he was going to tell himself that might be scoring -16 through 36 holes, he would have taken that. This reflected the confidence he had in his gameplay which he will continue to display in the last two rounds.
Even the PGA Tour Radio’s Dennis Paulson commented on Collin Morikawa’s confidence. He said:
“I’ve never seen him look as confident on the greens as we have so far this week”
Tour Championship press meet
With that, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that Morikawa has established a good score for himself going into Round 3 of the game. However, he would be aiming to capitalize his game further and earn that prestigious title along with the colossal prize money.
