The US Open is in full force with high velocity shots and even powerful emotions. While the competition is underway on one side. On the other end, unprecedented occurrences are a part of the game. Unusual matters aren’t especially rare to take place in the field of sports.
Along similar lines, the doubles games on Saturday witnessed a bizarre unfolding of events. It featured the Belgian and German-Russian teams but also a squirrel time and again. The match had a point called dead on Saturday, once the umpire noticed the presence of the fifth participant.
The squirrel incident that made Zvonareva throw up her hands
As the match was ongoing between Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer and the German-Russian players Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva, the umpire noticed an unfamiliar situation. The tennis court got ready to witness a winning shot as the German-Russian force had already delivered a volley.
However, their actions soon came to a halt as a squirrel interrupted the gameplay. Not only did it pause the match, but Zvonareva jumped into her reflex action immediately. She threw her hands up in the air as the squirrel ran across the court and then escaped into the nearby stands.
How did the US Open game proceed?
Eventually, the umpire resumed the game, and the players took their positions. As a result, Siegemund and Zvonareva seeded 12 in women’s tennis doubles, went ahead, and won the game, the round and ultimately the match.
Following this memorable match of 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-0 victory, the duo will face the American forces. Robin Montgomery and Clervie Ngounoue, in their second round, beat the Czech Republic team with impressive dominance.
Less than an hour later, another squirrel made an appearance
It is very often that one witnesses animals in the sports arena disturbing the match play. But, when something similar happens, it usually doesn’t happen twice. Not this time, though! Not only was the squirrel witnessed on the court once, but it also hindered the play half an hour later again.
At Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, the Nittany Lions’ victory over West Virginia witnessed a squirrel making a round of the area during a break in play. Humorously, one of the sources made a funny comment about the statement. They said,
“Beaver Stadium is about 250 miles away from New York’s Billie Jean King Tennis Centre, so it’s probably safe to say this was a different squirrel”.
