Stoffel Vandoorne came home to see the chequered flag securing his third career victory in Round 6 of the Monaco E World Championship, .The Belgian driver for Mercedes-EQ was emphatic after his victory at the prestigious and iconic Monte Carlo circuit. The win now puts him in the lead of the Driver’s Championship by 6 points, with Mercedes-EQ leading the teams’ standings.
Champagne for Vandoorne?
Jaguar’s Mitch Evans had clinched pole on the narrowest street circuit in the world. However, the front row position did not prove decisive enough as Vandoorne, who has raced for McLaren in F1 in the past, emerged victorious in a race that saw yellow flags as well as safety cars. Vandoorne took full advantage of this as he launched off quickly during both restarts. His win was also made easier by the retirement of Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche). Evans finished behind in P2, with Jean-Eric Vergne, another former F1 driver, finishing on the last step of the podium for DS TECHEETAH. The Frenchman thus maintains his consistency by scoring points in every race so far.
“It is an amazing feeling,” Vandoorne said after the victory. Monaco is always a special race to win as a driver. Last year we had a tough time here, but this year we managed to turn it around. The target was to qualify at the front, and then I knew we would be in the mix, and that is exactly how the race panned out. We were flying today. A massive well done to the team for giving me a
strong car. It has not been an easy start to the season, but it shows the consistency we have, “the winner further said in a statement.
The rest of the points
Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns narrowly missed the podium after troubling Vergne. Antonia Felix da Costa played the team game to finish P5 and haul in important points along with Vergne. Nick Cassidy, Sebastien Buemi, Jake Dennis, and reigning world champion Nyck De Vries finished in the top 10 and brought much-needed points to their teams. The championship will now move forward to a doubleheader in Berlin on May 14 and 15.
