Sustainable fashion saves the planet and ourselves from the exploitation of fashion industries

Fast fashion exploits the poor, and the environment, and of course, women. A tragic Rana Plaza accident in 2013 killed 1132 labourers, which helped uncover fast fashion’s cruelty, and paved the path for the sustainable fashion movement to progress and create awareness.

Sustainable fashion saves the planet and ourselves from the exploitation of fashion industries:

You must have come across influencers stating that they prefer sustainable fashion over fast fashion. Have you ever cross-question, ‘why do they prefer sustainable fashion over fast fashion? What does sustainable fashion mean?’

What is Sustainable Fashion?

Sustainable Fashion or ethical Fashion is a process of fostering change to sustainable clothing towards the betterment of ecological integrity and social justice. In other words, sustainable fashion refers to eco-friendly clothing, which is manufactured, designed and distributed to provide a friendly environment.

Today’s Fashion is NOT sustainable:

A sustainable fashion industry must produce materials that can continue to sustain for years and decades to come.

Unfortunately, fast fashion is currently dominating the industry. The procedure of fast fashion is obtaining the design inspiration from the fashion runaways and produce large quantities in the shortest timeframe possible for one new collection. Hence, the low-cost approach imitates the latest fashion trends in a lower quality yet affordable.

But, the truth is these fast fashion costs much higher prices than we think. Fast-fashion exploit its labourers to produce these low-quality brand at affordable price.

Fast-Fashion exploitation of its labourers: Global fashion brands have fostered a lifestyle of low prices and discounts. Fast fashion seasons continue to attract middle to low-income consumers. But this business strategy yield profits in the hands of a few at the cost of impoverishing low-wage workers and families, many of whom live in Asia.

Women and girls’ exploitation is exposed to gender-based violence, discrimination, highly unsafe environment and health haphazard. Due to the pressure of brands, factory suppliers pay less to these workers based on their gender. What not; they’re most likely lead to higher unemployment rates and low wages. According to the fashion industry, social oppression is considered ‘normal’ in business practice along with race, caste, religion, gender and migrant status.

The Tragic Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh: On 24th April 2013, the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which housed five garment factories killed nearly 1132 people. This disaster incident gained massive attention from the public. The truth of the poor labour conditions faced by workers in the ready-made garment sector in Bangladesh came into the light.

Labourers are prone to accidents: Most industries do not meet the building and construction legislation standards. As a result, deaths from fire incidents and building collapses are frequent.

To avoid exploiting labours and the environment, we can practice few things to sustain the quality of others well-being and ourselves.

How does ethical fashion will solve the problem of the environment?

We have been producing more than we can consume for a long time now, and we have been disposing of way more than the earth can renew and replenish. The fashion industry is a significant contributor to that pile of waste accumulated in various landfills and dumping yards worldwide.

ethical fashion will solve the problem using organic matters, biodegradable dyes, and engineering patterns, creating zero waste.

Contributing to sustainable fashion will reduce the product purchased in fast fashion.

What do you look for in ethical fashion?

Low impact natural and organic materials:

Natural materials such as hemp, linen, cotton, silk, wool, leather, and cellulose  (i.e., synthetically made fibres originating from plant sources, including viscose, rayon, lyocell, etc.) are generally preferable over virgin, petroleum-derived synthetics like polyester, acrylic, and nylon.

The reason behind these materials is because they are biodegradable and can compose cleanly back into the soil.

Sustainable fashion provides us with an alternative to fast fashion choice, which is toxic to the world. Another reason to choose sustainable fashion is for hemp; they are perfect for the skin. In addition to this, it generates less waste and takes care of the environment with utmost care. It helps us to prospect the world with a more transparent and cleaner version. Last but not least, it allows us to value our wardrobe with a more sterile solution.
