Disappointment for Dhawan and Samson
Dhawan scored 412 runs during the 2015 World Cup, becoming India’s top scorer on Australia’s challenging tracks. In the previous World Cup, back in 2019, he had also scored a century, but a fractured thumb caused his campaign to end early.
Given that he will turn 38 in exactly three months, it is quite likely that Dhawan’s time wearing the national blue is almost certainly coming to an end, leaving his supporters inconsolable. He was dropped due to run of form and will mark the end of his tenure as the reliable opening batsman for India.
Samson had a good chance to stake a claim to a spot on the Indian team earlier this year. He had the option of filling in as the middle of the order’s backup batting. It also helps to be a keeper. The Kerala player, though, faltered at the wrong time. Samson has averaged 22.16 across formats in seven opportunities since the West Indies trip.
His ODI average before the tour was an excellent 66, but after the two matches against the West Indies, those stats have fallen.Samson is left out of the 15-person roster because the selectors prefer Suryakumar in the middle order and because Rahul has returned, adding another glove option. Tilak Varma has also failed to make the cut.
