The word technology is derived from the Greek word’s ‘techne’ and ‘logo’. ‘Techne’ means the skills required to craft something and the knowledge of people to discuss something. Thus, technology means the usage of knowledge to create something to extend life. It is the use of science and scientific principles for our welfare.
Over the last two decades or so, technology has played a crucial part in the significant development of humankind. It is like a pillar that is keeping the humanity at its bay. It has become an integral part of our livelihood.
The main purpose of technology is to assist human kind in complex activities and jobs. Today, technology surrounds us. Whether it be cars, buses etc… to bring us to and from one destination to the other, or cellphones or laptops that has made connecting with people from worldwide easier. Technology is everywhere and has become a very important part of humankind.
Internet is one of the most important inventions in the history that has allowed for the information to be at our fingertips, just a click away. Today, no one can imagine their lives without the internet. Indeed, our existence itself depends on it now. We are living is era of science and technology.
It is said that “technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master”. It means that technology can either be a useful tool that helps in the advancement of a civilization, or a lethal weapon that helps in the destruction or demolishment of a society/ civilization. It just depends on the reason we use technology for.
Technology: A boon
Technology has proven to be very useful and helpful in various fields, whether it be education or infrastructure. It also enhances the usefulness of goods and services and helps in creating value. Technology is a bane because it provides so many advantages such as:
- Innovations
- Cost efficiency
- Time savings
- Ease of mobility
- Communication means
- Accessibility
- Better learning means
These advantages are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more advantages of technology that a normal human being could not even fathom. The advantages can be personal, work related and socially related. It is very useful in making new discoveries to make human lives easier and more comfortable. It can also be beneficial for gaining an access to knowledge at a global level.
Technology is a boon as long as it our slave.
Even though technology has many advantages, it also has its fair share of disadvantages.
Technology: A bane
Other than the good aspects, it has its significant share of bad aspects as well. When we let the technology become our master, it becomes our bane. Mind you, technology can never be a master on its own. When not used properly, or used for harmful purposes, it becomes a detriment to learning and development. It can also cause bad effects to our health.
Technology can also be used to target people negatively on the internet. Too much addiction to internet can also cause harm to children who are still growing and can hinder their growth and development. It is also indirectly very harmful to our environment.
In conclusion, it can be said that if used with good intensions and in a limited capacity, technology can be a great boon to humanity and help in the development of civilizations at an incredible rate. Whereas, if used with bad/harmful intentions, it can cause great harm to humankind and can even lead to its destruction.
So, let’s all be mindful and use technology smartly and never let it become our master from a slave.
