Shashi Tharoor, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament, lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for directing the BJP to a landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a man of tremendous vigour and dynamism and has done some things which are very impressive, especially politically. We did not expect him to win with such great margins but he did,” said Mr. Tharoor while interacting with the media at the Jaipur Literature Festival.
After praising the Prime Minister for winning four out of five states, Tharoor accused him of unleashing forces that have divided the country along communal and religious lines, describing the situation as ‘unfortunate’, according to ANI.
He stated that very few predicted the BJP’s victory prior to the release of exit polls. The Congress leader stated that prior to the exit poll results, the majority of people undoubtedly believed it would be a “very, very close fight” with the BJP, with some even speculating that the Samajwadi Party could win.
“Many people had not anticipated the BJP regaining power with such a majority. The Samajwadi Party’s (SP) seats have increased, and as a result, they will make an effective opposition “he continued.
Yogi Adityanath’s BJP retained power in Uttar Pradesh, winning 255 of the state’s 403 Assembly seats. Shashi Tharoor stated that the Indian voter has the capacity of surprising, and that they will one day surprise the BJP.
