It’s just two weeks since UU Lalit took charge as the new Chief Justice of India and along with the highest court of law, the entire country witnessed the power-packed 14 days with few of the long pending list of cases which also includes Siddiqui Kappan bail pleading.
Interesting to note that all those important cases which should have been heard till now were still pending and the newly appointed CJI took no time in hearing them off. This also makes his intention of dealing with all the pending and backlog cases very clear and the Public also believes this to be the biggest need of the hour. During the very first hear, the CJI observed that there are lot of backlog cases that haven’t been heard even once more than last year and hence trying to regulate the same.
It is no irony that more than 200 petitions were solely dealing with Citizenship Amendment Act as this was very much evident from the huge protests, we all got to witness in the past couple of years. All those petitions were listed for the hearing in front of the CJI.
Some of the cases dealt with in the past 2 weeks include Siddiqui Kappan who was in jail for two years after being arrested in 2020 in Hathras conspiracy. The bench while granting the bail observed that the petition was wrongly conceived. Another petition was challenging the suspended human rights in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Supreme Court bench led by CJI refused to entertain a petition filed seeking the arrest and calling for an independent investigation of the former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her alleged remarks against the Prophet Muhammad.
Supreme Court also agreed to grant urgent hearing to a plea by a 17-year-old boy seeking that he be allowed to donate his liver to his 43-year-old critically ill father, who is suffering from acute liver failure. Supreme Court bench led by CJI allowed urgent listing of cases related to stray dog menace in Kerala. The bench was informed that 12-year-old girl was attacked by a dog despite taking an anti-rabies vaccine and was in a critical condition
A plea that Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson, be detained and requesting for an independent investigation into her alleged anti-Muslim statements was turned down by a Supreme Court panel chaired by Chief Justice India.
The Supreme Court also consented to hear a 17-year-old boy’s urgent request for permission to give his liver to his severely ill 43-year-old father who is experiencing acute liver failure. The CJI-led Supreme Court panel permitted the urgent listing of cases involving the stray dog problem in Kerala. The bench was informed that a 12-year-old girl who had received the anti-rabies vaccine and was in serious condition had been attacked by a dog. Concludingly the court allowed urgent listing of such cases.
