The Asian Games, which were supposed to take place in September in Hangzhou, China, have been postponed until 2024, according to Randhir Singh, the interim President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
The 19th edition of the multi-sports Games, which are only second in scale to the Summer Olympics, was set to take place in the capital of Zhejiang province, some 175 kilometers southwest of Shanghai, from September 10 to 25.
The reason for the postponement was not immediately stated, however there were concerns about the event taking place in Shanghai, which had just been shut down due to a COVID-19 epidemic.
Last month, organizers announced that 56 competition venues for the Asian Games and Asian Para Games had been completed in Hangzhou, a metropolis of 12 million people in eastern China.
They said at the time that the games will be hosted under a virus-control framework that “learns from the successful experience” of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which took place in a Covid-secure bubble in February.
In the near future, the OCA, the COC, and the HAGOC will come to an agreement on the revised dates for the 19th Asian Games.
