Games postponed : A one-year wait for the athletes
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) stated on Tuesday that the Asian Games 2022, which were previously scheduled for September of this year, will now take place from September 23 to October 8, 2024.
The rapid spread of COVID-19 in and around the host city of Hangzhou, China, forced the postponement of the Asian Games in May. The dates for the quadrennial event were set on September 10 to September 25, 2022.
The OCA created a task committee to come up with new dates that wouldn’t interfere with other significant international sporting events next year after announcing the postponement of the Asian Games on May 6.
The task force discussed the September–October 2024 period with the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (HAGOC), and other stakeholders.
The 19th edition of the Asian Games will be hosted in China for the third time. The Games were held in the Chinese capital Beijing in 1990 and in Guangzhou in 2010.
The Olympic Council of Asia issued a statement saying, “The OCA thanks HAGOC, the Chinese Olympic Committee, as well as the governments at all levels, for ensuring they (Asian Games) can take place next year.”
The national Olympic committees, international/Asian federations, and other stakeholders’ patience has been appreciated, the OCA would like to add.

All venues and facilities for the Asian Games 2022 were built and ready to use by April.
The Asian Games are the most recent big sporting event to have postponements or cancellations as a result of the Covid-19 problem. The Olympic Games, the biggest sporting event on the planet, were moved from 2020 to 2021 because of the pandemic. Despite opposition from certain Japanese citizens to their country hosting the international sporting event, the Summer Games went on as scheduled.
The Olympic Games continued without any significant effects from COVID-19 as athletes from all around the world dealt with the stress of the Olympics in Tokyo.
The Asian Games of 2018 were held in Jakarta and Palembang. India had earned 69 medals overall, including 15 gold medals, placing 8th in the medal standings. In the absence of the Asian Games this year, India’s top athletes will focus on the Commonwealth Games. From July 28 to August 8, Birmingham will host the CWG.
