“It’s always easy to declare that other people are idiots, but only if you forget how idiotically difficult being human is.”
Desperate or dire need to appear smart creating flawed identities:
Everybody wants to appear smarter than they actually are. They want to seem intelligent and intellectual, and it often disheartens them when somebody thinks of them as a fool.
It is not just flawed individuals that it has created, but also multiple insecurities among the youth. The flawed idea of appearing smarter has made people highly vulnerable and unacceptable to themselves.
They might start questioning the things about themselves that they would never notice if nobody made fun of them. Also, a few things that never deserve to be changed or changed but not pretended to have changed.
It’s always good to improve, but at the cost of pretending to be someone else and killing our unique individuality? I request you to humbly reflect before doing it to yourself.
Why does everybody want to appear smart?
The reason is simple: to avoid the judgement of other people, to avoid being the target. People have become so critical of each other that they don’t even realise when they cross the line.
They want to make fun, even when there’s nothing funny about how the person behaves. And nobody understands how dangerously it impacts a person’s mind.
No wonder how an easily said thing can transform a person’s idea of themselves in a negative way. This has created a desperate need to appear smart, and therefore, flawed individuals.
What are the actions people take to look smart?
People who want to appear intelligent are more likely to change the content of their conversation. They may try to use a more impressive vocabulary or discuss topics that are thought to be intellectually stimulating.
If you Google, you’ll notice an ample number of articles on how to appear smart; 10 techniques for appearing smarter than you are, 7 ways to appear confident when you are not, and a lot more like these.
This is because people want to know about it.That is why they search for such things. I don’t have anything against improving ourselves; it is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
But, how to “appear” smart? Why try to appear something you don’t feel naturally is the question.
Why make it so hard to try to appear smart and reduce all the possibilities of being better? By questioning without thinking, how would others perceive one’s intelligence about it?
What does try to be smart actually look like?
In the experiments conducted, people who tried to appear smarter experienced a drop in intelligence. Not only this, anyone who’s “trying hard” to be smarter can be easily plotted.
People who are encouraged to be smarter become more critical as compared to others. They would want to sound not just different but intellectually apt as well.
Way forward
Coming out of this illusion is not easy as society shapes us, but this is the need of the hour. How people actually perceive us has nothing to do with who we are.
Perceptions of everybody would vary, so how could everybody’s point be true? One must come out of this rat-race and stop being desperate to appear smart.
And strive to become comfortable in one’s own skin without paying heed to how they might appear. How one feels from the inside creates an impact on one’s mind.
Be happy, your life is not meant to impress people.
The desperate need to appear smart doesn’t take a person anywhere but creates flawed identities.
