Over the last 5 to 6 year span, Apple has been quite lenient with the amount of iPhones that they release every year. The company launched a maximum of three iPhones per year before the launch of iPhone 12 in 2020 which saw four models being released along with the iPhone SE 2020 which was launched four months before the release of the above.
Ever since 2020, four has become the new normal for Apple. Previously, the iPhone 14 Plus replaced the iPhone 13 Mini by Cupertino-based tech giant. However, the rumor has been going around in the tech industry that we might have a 5th iPhone release at October’s Wonderlust event of Apple.
Origination of the 15 Ultra
According to a post on X by a tipster known as Majin Bu that there could be a change in the line-up of this year’s iPhone 15’s Based on the information he was able to access.
In the further details of his post, he mentioned that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be featuring up to 6 GB of RAM and also up to 1 TB of storage. However, unlike every year since 2020, this will not be the final or the top tier iPhone of the year.
Apple may bring out another phone known as the iPhone 15 Ultra, which will have up to 8 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage. The iPhone 15 Ultra will reportedly have much better camera, specifications and features than the iPhone 15 Pro series.
The Price Hike
He has also stated that the iPhone 15 Ultra will have a $100 hike then the iPhone 15 Pro Max which in turn will have its own hundred dollars to $200 hike. According to previous rumors and leaks reports, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is estimated to be around $1299. Therefore, the 15 Ultra could be estimated around $1399 or much more.
The Question of Legitimacy
The interesting observation to note is that as soon as the tipsters post went up, he backtracked his claims by saying that he knows for a fact that both of the 6.7 inch display different models have been tested but he has no confirmed information about the release of both of them simultaneously.
Rumors put to Bed
These rumors were iced by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman who wrote in his X post that there is not going to be two or even three high end models, but only one. This suggests that Apple may be going back to its previous three models per year release pattern.
The reports about the release of an iPhone 15 Ultra is not at all new. As soon as the 14 series of the iPhones was released, Gurman stated in his report, that for next year, the iPhone may change its naming strategies to match their new high end smart watch, which is the Apple Watch Ultra. Thereby, the top model of the iPhone 15 series will be named as iPhone 15 Ultra.
It is also interesting to note that as the release date nears, the rumors have become more frequent in nature. The probability of an iPhone Ultra is not far fetched. Apple has already done it once, that is having four models released every year unlike the three models that they were releasing.
For now, Gurman’s report has put these rumors and so called reports to rest, and we shall see with our own two eyes whether these rumors are true or not in Apple’s Wonderlust event, which will happen on 12th of September 2024.
