The first phase of Manipur assembly elections to 38 constituencies is disfigured by violence on Monday. Although, 67.53 per cent of around 12.09 lakh voters cast their votes till 3 pm, said election officials.
A state police personnel Naorem Ibochouba was posted for poll duty in the Tipaimukh assembly constituency in Chura Chandpur district. He died in a “suspected case of accidental firing” from his service rifle, Rajesh Agarwal, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), said.
Imphal West district has the highest number of constituencies and registered 70.21 per cent polling. However, Imphal East reported 65.81 per cent voting only. Kangpokpi district recorded the highest voters’ get up at 76.74 per cent.
The first phase voters got up could surpass the 2017 assembly election’s polling percentage of 86 per cent. Election officials said it was the highest recorded in the state to date.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Governor La Ganesan were among the early voters in Heingang and Sagolband. They encouraged people to exercise their voting rights and maintain peace. However, many incidents of poll violence were reported from various parts of the state.
· In West Imphal district in Langthbal, a constituency in the Kakwa area, alleged Congress workers vandalised a BJP polling booth. At the same time, a vehicle of an NPP candidate was damaged by supporters of a rival group in the Keirao assembly seat, although nobody was injured in the incident.
· Voting began in the early morning at 7 am in 1,721 polling stations in five districts, amongst tight security and strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. They said a total of 173 candidates, including 15 women, are in the fray.
· At the New Keithelmanbi polling station in Kangpokpi, district Security forces fired blank rounds to control the crowd. The situation arose after Congress accused BJP of attempting to capture the booth.
· 6,884 polling personnel have been posted in the polls.
· Voters initially waited patiently for their turn in chalk-marked circles by maintaining social distancing.
