The recent OBC bill was passed as per the 127th amendment, which restores the power of the states to make their own OBC lists. The union territories and the states will be able to make and maintain their own lists of OBC.
It has received support from almost all sections of society as well as the state. This decision actually took place when the meeting for the quota for the Marathas was in session. The bill can cause socio-politico turmoil as there will be a different representation of quotas in each state. Some states might agree with the Maratha quota while other states won’t.
This may cause hostile situations between state religious populations. Other sub-castes and sections of the society will expect more from the government and hence will push for more representation and quotas. In all, this will increase the reservation ratio, can disturb the religion-politico balance and can cause tensions between different sections of the society.
Due to the reservations and the quotas, the general category has always been longing for fair play in the political scenario. Also, the Maratha reservation had a cap of 50%, it was decided to revisit this topic in 30 years. The cap couldn’t be changed till there was an actual reveal of the caste census.
This bill was appreciated but certain members want the cap to be removed, as they think this bill would be more successful without the cap.
India has been a country which has always had grey areas and thinking gaps when it comes to deciding on the issues regarding the OBC. This quality has not always played in the country’s favour.
