On Thursday, the Biden administration has announced that it will be providing ‘Temporary Protected Status’ to the citizens of war-inflicted Ukraine. The decision has been taken to provide humanitarian relief to the country.
This move is expected to protect thousands of Ukrainians from being deported to their war-torn homeland.
The step has allowed the nationals of the eastern European nation to remain in the United States for upto 18 months under the federal program of the US known as the “Temporary Protected Status.”
Only those Ukrainian citizens will be eligible for protection under the program who came to the United States at least by Tuesday.
The administration informed that Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine is the reason behind this decision.
Since World War 2, the Russian invasion of Ukraine marks the largest conventional military action in Europe. As a result of ongoing conflict, more than one million people have been displaced from the country since 24 February, causing a humanitarian crisis.
What Administrators think?
Alejandro N Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary, told the press,
“Russia’s premediated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence that has forced Ukrainians to seek refuge in other countries.”
According to a non-partisan think tank, Migration Policy Institute, this move is going to benefit around 30,000 people.
Majority leader and senator, Chuck Schumer praised Biden Administration for giving temporary protection to citizens of Ukraine.
“I applaud President Biden for taking decisive action so that Ukrainians can stay safely in America,”
said Schumer.
