Thrombosis is defined as a blood clot that occurs in the arteries, veins, etc. It is a life-threatening condition because it restricts the blood flow to the vital organs. Let’s discuss this in detail.
Thrombosis
Blood solidification is also known as thrombosis. It is a life-threatening condition. If a blood vessel is obstructed by a clot it can obstruct the flow of blood to all the vital organs like the brain, heart, etc.
Types
- Arterial thrombosis occurs when a blood clot happens in arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart.
- Venous thrombosis occurs when a blood clot happens in a vein that carries blood toward the heart.
- Deep Vein thrombosis(DVT) occurs when a blood clot happens in the lungs-Pulmonary embolism. It includes life fatal risks.
Causes
1. In the case of some hereditary conditions, hypercoagulability or an increase in the thickness of the blood takes place. Due to this, a blood clot occurs. This is called Thrombophilia.
2. If any injury happens to the blood vessels or their lining, a blood clot occurs over there.
3. Thrombosis may also occur due to cancer, irregular heartbeats, heart failure, etc.
4. Taking birth control pills such as estrogen and progestin
5. Standing or sitting in a single position for long hours
6. It may also happen after surgeries if any of the blood vessels get damaged.
7. Due to some hereditary disorders.
8. Smoking is the main reason for thrombosis as it can damage the blood vessel walls.
Symptoms:
a. Color changes can happen beyond the blockage in the affected parts of the body.
b. The affected area will get very little blood supply, so it will become too cold to touch.
c. Numbness or tingling sensation in the affected parts.
d. Blisters or wounds in the affected areas.
e. Necrosis or cell death can also occur.
Diagnostic procedures:
1. Physical Examination
2. X-rays, MRI, Ultrasound
3. Clot-formation markers &
4. Heart damage Markers.
Treatment methodologies:
a. Using Anticoagulant medications
b. Clot Dissolving Injections
c. Mechanical thrombectomy using catheters
d. Cholesterol-lowering medicines
