Even as the world is reeling under the spread of Monkeypox and COVID-19, a rare viral disease called the Tomato Flu affects children in India.
Tomato flu, or tomato fever, has been reported in India since early May. Eventually, more than 80 cases of Tomato flu have been identified in states like Orissa and Kerala, prompting the border states to enhance vigil.
The flu has been eventually affecting children in the age group of 1–9. According to the Lancet Respiratory Journal, the first case of the flu was reported in Kollam village in Kerala on May 6.
“Just as we are dealing with the probable emergence of the fourth wave of Covid-19, a new virus known as tomato flu, or tomato fever, has emerged in India in the state of Kerala in children younger than 5 years,” Lancet said in its report.
As there seems to be a rising concern regarding this rare viral infection, this article reports some symptoms and remedies of the flu for the young ones in your family to remain safe.
What is Tomato Flu?
it is a viral infection that causes red-colored rashes, itching, and dehydration. It is a hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and gets its name from the tomato-like blisters it causes on the skin. Children aged 1-9 are highly prone to this flu as they do not possess strong enough immunity to defend themselves from this virus.
The cause and symptoms
An unknown intestinal virus causes tomato flu.” The symptoms are similar to those of Covid-19, but the virus is unrelated to SARS-CoV-2. It could also be an aftereffect of dengue or chikungunya in children and leave painful blisters on their skin.
Although researchers are still unsure about the type of virus responsible for the flu, they have identified certain specific symptoms. These are:
- Tomato-like blisters on hands, feet, and buttocks
- Painful sores in the mouth
- Fever
- Body ache
- Extreme dehydration
- Fatigue
- Joint swelling
- Stomach pain
Treatment of Tomato Flu
Health experts say Tomato flu is a self-limiting infection, and the symptoms resolve after a few days. The flu has been identified recently, so no specific medication is available so far. Doctors usually prescribe antipyretic and pain relievers to subside symptoms. Patients are given plenty of fluids and a hot water bath to eliminate rashes.
It is a contagious disease and can be spread by direct contamination. Experts advise complete isolation for 5-7 days.
Prevention of the flu
As we know, prevention is the best treatment in a sudden unknown disease outbreak. Some preventive measures to curb the spread of Tomato flu:
- Educate your child about the signs and symptoms of Tomato flu
- Avoid direct contact with the infected person
- Encourage your children to maintain personal hygiene
- Stop their thumb-sucking habit
- Don’t scratch or rub the infected blisters
- Encourage your child to drink plenty of water and juice
- Eat a nutritious and balanced diet to boost immunity
When to see a doctor?
So, it is better to consult a doctor if you notice any of the signs and symptoms of the flu in your child. If you suspect the infection, immediately isolate your child from the others to stop its spread.
