Each day we make umpteen choices that affect our environment and sustainable living, directly or indirectly. The climate and other living beings are also affected in the process. The choices we make range from what we eat each day to how big a family size we choose to have. If we make choices consciously by giving thought to each decision we take, we can definitely choose the wild and minimize our footprints on the environment, which will make more space for wildlife. The animal and plant kingdoms would grow and not be affected in a negative manner. Here are some ways to create a more sustainable living.
Ways to Create a More Sustainable Living
- Think before you shop- Any purchase we make, leaves an effect on the environment known as the environmental footprint. Every step of making a product affects the environment- the raw material used to make it, the level of pollution generated due to its manufacture, and the packaging material used for its usage and transportation, which later is used as a landfill. We all need to do mindful shopping, i.e., buy if we really need a thing. If we intend to really buy, we can look for things that have been used carefully and also keep in mind that minimum packing and shipping are involved.
- Bigger buys should have similar environmental benefits too- It is not easy for all people to change their old automobiles quite often for the new eco-friendly hybrid car because a new car will require a new set of components and other resources, so switch to the latest version of a car is not advisable too. While buying a car, we can definitely choose a car that has high fuel efficiency. This will help to save a lot of money on fuel and minimize our carbon footprint all the years. Similarly, we can switch to solar energy as a substitute for a water heater.
- Cut down on plastic waste- Once manufactured plastic cannot be destroyed, and it is being dumped in oceans which is killing the aquatic plants and animals. To reduce plastic usage, we can use cloth bags, cut down on online shopping and shop locally, and eliminate plastic straws, bottles, etc.
- Discontinue usage of products that put wildlife at risk- To minimize or cut down on activities that endanger wildlife, we need to do mindful shopping, avoid deforestation, promote products made of bamboo which is sustainable, and also go to restaurants that do not serve seafood of any endangered species.
- Read on the process followed to make a product- We can choose products that have been certified as fair trade goods which are committed to sustainability and pay the laborers also fairly. Organic food should be preferred as it is pesticide free, protects the farmers, and does not harm humans or animals.
- Wise usage of water- Eliminate the usage of bottled water as plastic bottle production is harmful to wildlife. Conserve water by fixing leakages, taking short showers, and low water consumption appliances.
- Eco-friendly driving- We can walk or use bicycles for running errands and combine them also to make fewer trips. Use car pools or public transport whenever possible to reduce the carbon footprint. Get the car checked regularly for better fuel efficiency.
- Make your home eco-friendly- Use low energy consumption light bulbs for better efficiency and get your electrical appliances regularly checked to maximize throughput.
- Maximize usage of natural energy- To slow down global warming, save wildlife and protect land and water, we need to choose to use more of natural energy resources like wind, sun, and other renewable resources. We can install windmills and solar panels to do so.
- Eat mindfully to eliminate extinction- The meat production and processing industry is very destructive for the environment which uses a lot of water, pollutes it, emits greenhouse gases, and destroys habitats. By minimizing the usage of meat we can reduce the environmental footprint. Reduce wastage of food by consuming what we purchase in the best way and shopping accordingly.
- Family, the smaller the better- We need to reduce the pressure on our resources- fossil fuels, food, water, and land so that they do not become extinct. For a better ecosystem, to decrease poverty, and to prevent human crowding, we need to have a smaller family size.
- Raise your voice for environmental concerns- Support representatives in the political parties who are genuinely concerned about environmental upgrades, support education, help wildlife flourish and protect land and child welfare. This will frame a better tomorrow.
