Boris Johnson is allowing a “wild west” culture of misogyny to flourish in Westminster, according to England’s only female metro mayor, by neglecting to address “the arrogance of privately educated men.”
“The thought that someone who was elected by the people is watching pornography on his phone while at work – I think it’s an aggressive act in the first instance because women and others will see you doing that,” Tracy Brabin, the Labour mayor of West Yorkshire, said. It’s also arrogant to think they’re above the law.
“Unfortunately, I believe it stems from the top. Because of the leader’s failure to do his duties, this behavior will only worsen. It’s a wild west if you don’t lead with ethics, dignity, inclusivity, and equality. It’s a no-holds-barred situation.”
Her remarks come as a spate of female MPs who came up with stories of discrimination and harassment in parliament, prompting fresh attention to misogyny and sexual misconduct.
Shadow Culture Secretary
After donning a dress that revealed part of her shoulder while speaking at the dispatch box in February 2020, the former shadow culture secretary got a barrage of online abuse. She tweeted at the time that she was “not a slag, hungover, a tart, ready to breastfeed, a slapper, intoxicated [or] just been banged over a wheelie bin” in response to her abusers.
“It was pretty shocking,” she remarked. It wasn’t frightening, but it was startling. What transpired was interpreted sexually by men. ‘They seem fatigued, or disheveled,’ people say about Boris Johnson or other people who come to the dispatch box, but it isn’t sexualized. “Women are always sexualized.”

She explained, “That’s what happened to Angie.” “It doesn’t say much about Boris Johnson that his colleagues think he’s like some teenager who can’t keep it in his pants because he’s easily distracted, but maybe they know him better than we do.”
