The huge fire that broke out in a railway arch in Southwark, central London on Wednesday, which gave rise to the evacuation of many buildings and the postponement of train services to the district, is currently under control, the London Fire Brigade said.
The fire brigade delivered ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters to the site, said there were no reports of any injuries and investigators had started an investigation into the matter of the fire.
The video clip posted by the fire brigade on Twitter revealed huge plumes of smoke originating from the railway arch, which the firefighter said comprised several vehicles and had been fully safe.
Reports said the fire spread across a car park below the railway arches in Southwark, where many electric cars were said to be burning.
Both Southwark and London Bridge stations were shut down.
The impact of the fire on Train
“The fire was generating a lot of smoke and those residing or working in the native district are requested to keep their windows and doors shut.” Station Commander Wayne Johnson reported on the fire service’s website.
“Trains to and from London Bridge were impacted, and many buildings were evacuated.” Eyewitnesses reported thick black smoke evident from outside London Bridge and Waterloo East stations.
The Brigade’s 999 control officers picked up 35 calls to the fire. They were capable of using 999Eye to live broadcast the fire from a smartphone to screens in the control room, providing greater visibility of the event.
Trains on the London Underground network’s Jubilee Line were also affected, with the London Fire Brigade saying smoke generating from a platform at London Bridge underground station was proved to have been from the railway arch fire.
Network Rail Kent and Sussex posted on Twitter that although the fire was controlled, it was still burning.
“Once it is safe to investigate the arches, we will do so, but currently there is no change to services with deviations and withdrawals across South London,” it said.
