UN secretary- general, Antonio Gutteres said that we should eliminate nuclear weapons before they destroy us. He said that this is a video message to the First Meeting of State Parties to the UN treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons. It was held in Vienna, Austria.Â
The UN chief further said that the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are fading from our minds, mentioning the bombing of the two Japanese cities during the 2nd world war.Â
The UN treaty of the prohibition of nuclear weapons
State parties to the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons(TPNW) started to examine the implementation, reviewed its status and measured the signatories progress towards the goal at their very first meeting on Tuesday. There are still more than 13,000 nuclear weapons across the world.
The treaty is an important move towards the common goal of a world without nuclear weapons, the UN chief said. It withholds a whole range of nuclear weapon related activities, like undertakes development, test, manufacture, acquire, produce or stock up nuclear weapons or nuclear devices. This treaty by the UN was adopted in July 2017 and was enforced in January 2021. 86 countries signed it as well as 65 countries confirmed it.Â
Decisions made in this meeting will help the treaty’s position as an important element of global disarmament and non proliferation efforts, the UN general said, conveying hope that many countries will be convinced to get on board.
