5% GST will be charged for the pre-packed and labelled food items (except frozen) like – curd, meat, paneer and honey. This was decided at the 47th meeting of the GST council on Tuesday.

During the 47th meeting of the GST council headed by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. She announced that through the recommendation from the group of ministers from states, it is decided that pre-packed and labelled food items will now be charged with 5% GST.
Unpacked, unlabelled and unbranded food items will be exempted from the 5% GST.
The list of goods included in the 5%GST foods items are as follows: –
Pre-packed and Labelled meat | Puffed rice |
Fish | Jaggery |
Curd | Wheat or meslin flour |
Honey | Wheat and other cereals |
Dried leguminous vegetables | Dried makhana |
Food items which are not branded, packed and labelled are not included in this GST bracket. Frozen meat is also excluded.
During the 47Th GST council meeting, many other changes were made and GST has been levied on new things. They are as follows: –
- It is also announced that an 18% GST will be imposed on the cost of issue of bank cheques either in loose or in bank form.
- 12% GST will be levied on maps and charts which also include Atlases.
- Hotel rooms which cost more than Rs 1000 will also be charged 12% GST.
- The inverted duty structure of items like edible oils, coal and others will be reworked according to the GST council approval.
- Today, the GST council will discuss the demand for the compensation paid to states for the revenue lost from taxes such as VAT being subsumed into national GST, besides 28% tax on the casino, online gaming and horse racing.
