In the 2nd phase of the UP-assembly election, which is conducted on 14th of February Monday, the voting was recorded as 39.0 % voters’ turnout till 1 p.m.
The voting takes place across 9 districts with 55 constituency seats. The voter turnout in each district was recorded as 42.32% in Saharanpur, 38.68% in Bijnor, 41.88% in Moradabad, 37.99% in Shambal. Rampur, Amroha, Badaun, Bareilly, and Shahjahanpur were recorded as 40.6%, 40.81%, 35.55%, 39.14%, and 35.34%, respectively.
The ruling Chief-Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, clarifies his statement, “80 verses 20”, a day before the second phase of the election. The statement was perceived as the divide in the vote of Hindus and Muslims.
He said that 80 percent are those people who appreciate the public welfare schemes of the Uttar Pradesh government, are happy with the state government’s plan of security, and who like development and got a chance to get their work (at government offices) done honestly and transparently.
At the same time, 20 percent are those who always opposed everything before and continue doing so now. They back money and crime and have negative thinking and remain so. This is how this election is of 80 versus 20.
In January, the Chief Minister said at a conclave organized by Doordarshan that in the assembly election of UP, the polls would be 80% and 20%, with BJP retaining in power.
He also said that his party would work on nationalism, good governance, and development.
In an interview with ANI, the saffron-clad Chief Minister said that with utter clarity, he could say that this is new India, this is the India with the world’s most popular leader Narendra Modi, and in this new India, development is for all and appeasement is for none.
Further, he said that the new India would work according to the Constitution and not the Shariat. He also wanted to say it clearly that the dream of Ghazwa-e-Hind (Holy conquest of India) will not be fulfilled even till the Qayamat (end of the world).
On his social media account, he posted a series of repeated statements. He wrote,
“Those who dream of Gazva-e-Hind, religious fanatics of Talibani thinking, understand this… India will run according to the Constitution, not according to Shariat (Islamic religious law) …!”
The statements are seen as a polarization attempt by Yogi Adityanath by social media users. Many of the seats in the second phase have a Muslim population and are considered a stronghold for the Samajwadi Party.
The Samajwadi Party is considered to be a strong opposition of the BJP government. The CM also claimed that no communal riot had broken out during his tenure, which has doubled during the time of the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav.
However, according to the data obtained from the National Crime Record Bureau (BCRB), no communal violence has taken place in the state since 2018, but in 2017, after the BJP came to power in the state, 195 communal incidents were recorded. Also, crimes registered under IPC after 2017 are increasing.
Speaking of Congress, he said that he pleaded to the people not to burden. The brother and sister duo are enough to drown the party
