Upsurge in Delta Variant Covid’19 Cases unsettles Greece: Catalonia imposes Public restrictions.

After lifting most of its public restrictions in May, Greece has reported a spike in Delta Variant COVID’19 Cases on Tuesday (July 6 2021). The numbers reached 1,797 daily cases, more than double the reported 801 cases on Monday. 19 De

Recorded data from the Public Health Authorities shows that the Delta Variant cases of COVID 19  in the last week rose by 75% as compared to the week before.

On May 14, the Government of Greece ended its nationwide lockdown and reopened its borders for international travel with some restrictions.

This was done to aid Greece’s financial crisis after the pandemic plunged the Greek economy, which is dependent on tourism.

The country saw a period of steady decline in the cases from May following early June. The daily recorded cases rose again by July 1 and soared from there. The nation is now at 34% of its peak and rising.

Based on available evidence, the Delta variant of the coronavirus is likely responsible for the steep rise in the daily cases. This mutated version of the virus is highly contagious and more transmissible than other circulating variants. In light of the spread in Greece, several European Union countries have tightened their entry restrictions again after relaxing some measures concerning travel and tourism.

Authorities have decided to impose restrictions in nightclubs, venues and restaurants after government officials stated that most new cases are youngsters out for entertainment.

“Effective July 8, restaurants, bars, clubs and entertainment venues will operate only with sitting clients and in line with legislated capacity rules, “Deputy Citizen’s Protection Minister Nikos Hardtails issues at a briefing.

According to WHO, there have been 426,963 confirmed cases of COVID 19 Delta Variant cases from January 3 2020, to July 6 2021, in Greece. 12,743 deaths related to the virus have been recorded, and 8,802,118 doses of COVID vaccines have been administered nationwide.

Catalonia puts up new measures after the surge in infections.

Catalonia in north-eastern Spain has decided to reimpose restrictions on nightlife as positive cases soar just weeks after nightclubs reopened in June.

The Spanish region has reinstated the curbs after the cases rose exponentially, especially among the younger people. Officials have said that the new measures are to tame the surge and prevent unvaccinated people from contracting and spreading the virus.

As per the new restrictions, nightclubs were closed last weekend, and a negative COVID 19 test or proof of vaccination will be required to partake in social events of more than 500 people.

Before infections began rising in June, the numbers had been steadily declining since April. The Spanish Government scrapped facemasks on June 26 as they no longer considered them obligatory for outdoors. Indoor and close interactions still require their use.

25,738 cases have been detected in Catalonia in the last seven days, which is five times the amount of cases recorded the week before. The average daily cases reached 4,503 as of July 7, which is +601% compared to the last two weeks.

The nightlife returned to Catalonia on June 21, as announced by the Nightlife sector. Masks were required, but no social distancing was needed inside the venues.50% of capacity was allowed inside, and the closing time was 3:30 am.

The rise of cases in the last few days among the youth in the Catalonia region has put pressure on the health system forcing the authorities to backtrack on their relaxation.

Spain has recorded a total of 3,880,612 COVID cases,80,952 confirmed deaths and 3,621,423recorded recoveries. The nation is at 32% of peak and rising.
