President Joe Biden to visit South Korea and Japan from May 20-24 amid growing tensions between North Korea and China. While in Tokyo, Biden will also meet the leaders of QUAD. Â
The White House recently announced President Joe Biden’s visit to South Korea and Japan from May 20- 24. Since joining the office last year, this will be Biden’s first visit as a President to Asia, and he will hold talks with his counterparts in South Korea and Japan. The visit aims to boost ties with the United States’ key allies to underscore a region amid tension between China and North Korea. Â
President Biden will meet newly elected President Yoon Suk Yel of the Republic of Korea and Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, as the world remains focused on the growing tension between Russia and Ukraine. The press secretary, Jen Psaki, said that this is to further deepen ties between the governments, economies, and people. The trip will further help to strengthen Harris-Biden’s commitment to an open and free Indo-Pacific and nourish their alliance with both countries. Â
The rise of communist China has been the number one strategic issue for the United States. The trip comes after North Korea has escalated its nuclear missile testing and China claiming places and is being assertive in the region. The trip comes when the US tries to keep its allies united against Russia’s ‘World War’ on Ukraine. The European countries are trying to provide military assistance to Ukraine amid mounting civilian deaths and intensifying fights that have accelerated inflation everywhere.Â
In Tokyo, US President is also set for his ‘second’ meeting with Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) Summit, including leaders from Japan, India, and Australia. Biden will hold bilateral talks with his counterparts ‘to forge a stronger partnership between QUAD members to tackle China in the Indo-Pacific.’ If everything goes as planned, this will be the first in-person meeting between the US President and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, since the Russia – Ukraine war. This will also be Joe Biden’s fourth international visit as President. In March, Biden last visited Poland and Belgium following the Russia- Ukraine War.
