Senator Marsha Blackburn of the United States made her fourth visit to Taiwan this month as she defied China’s wrath on Thursday night (August 25).
Blackburn referred to Taiwan as a “nation” and pledged support for the island’s “independence” when she met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday, according to a South China Morning Post (SCMP) article.
“I’ve just arrived in Taiwan to tell Beijing that we won’t be intimidated. The United States stands steadfast in upholding freedom throughout the world and will not put up with actions that aim to harm our country and our allies” tweeted she.
Additionally, she emphasised the significance of helping the island “preserve its freedom.”
“I anticipate having a lovely visit. And yes, I do cherish the memories of my trip to your country in 2008 and the chance to view part of it up close, “She continued.
The Republican from Tennessee continued, “We look forward to continuing to help and support Taiwan as they march forward as an independent nation.”
Taiwan’s ministry of foreign affairs expressed gratitude for the US congresspersons’ visit, noting that it came at a time “when China continues to heighten its threat” and “when they have once again shown their unwavering support and commitment to Taiwan.”
China was incensed by the recent visits and held military exercises close to Taiwan’s. China has also asserted that it will use force to reunite the two regions if necessary because Taiwan is seen as a part of its territory.
Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan, appreciated the trips in the meanwhile. “Numerous public figures from a diverse range of American society have recently visited Taiwan. These gracious deeds and resolute displays of solidarity have strengthened Taiwan’s resolve to defend itself “In comments that were broadcast live on Tsai’s social media accounts, she stated.
