Ukraine would soon get the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems that the USA uses for the protection of the White House.
Â
On Saturday, the United States announced it would send two NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine to strengthen its fight against Russian invasion. NASAMS missile system is used by the U.S. to protect the White House.
The NASAMS missile systems are part of the latest $820 million packages announced by President Joe Biden. The package also includes four-counter artillery radars and 150000 rounds of artillery ammunition.
The NASAMS is a surface-to-air missile system, developed by a Norwegian company. It provides medium to long-range defense. The missile system has been used by the United States for the protection of airspace around the Capitol and the White House.
The statement says that the U.S. will also be sending an additional four High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). Previously the U.S. has sent four HIMARS to Ukraine that is being used in the war.
The U.S. military support to Ukraine has reached $7bn since the start of the war. This week at a NATO conference in Madrid President Biden said that the U.S. will continue to support Ukraine in this war as long as it takes.
Although the U.S. remains the largest arms contributor to Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion, many other countries have also assisted in military aid.
The United Kingdom has announced an aid of half a billion dollars in support. The package includes air defense systems, anti-tank missiles, armored vehicles, rockets, and explosives.
Canada has contributed $200mn worth of military aid. Turkey has also provided TB2 combat drones. Many other European countries such as Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, France, and Poland have provided military aid to Ukraine.
The new military aid is crucial for Ukraine as Russia has become very offensive and gaining ground in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked President Biden stating that the package and the support of the U.S. are going to significantly strengthen their air defense and war efforts against Russia.
It has been almost 5 months since Russia-Ukraine began on February 24, and there are no signs of ending this war. The war has caused large-scale deaths and displacement. The global supply chains and economy have been hit severely by the war.
