The Spanish club knocks Juventus out of the Champions League in 2022 and proceeds to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.
On Wednesday, 16 March 2022, Villarreal battled Juventus in the round of 16 knock-offs to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the champions league 2022.
The teams competed in two legs. The first leg was played on 23rd February in Villarreal’s stadium; Estadio de la Cerámica, in Castelló, Spain and ended with a tie 1-1.
The second leg was played yesterday at Allianz Stadium, Juventus’ Stadium, in Turin, Italy. The Spanish club defeated the Italian Giants on their home ground with 3-0, making the aggregate score 4-1 in favour of Villarreal.
This win for the current Europa League Champions saves their spot in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for 2021–2022, making it the first time in 13 years for the team to reach that round. The win for Villarreal also means Juventus’ third consecutive exit from the Champions League.
The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Friday, March 18, in Nyon, Switzerland, at the House of European Football.
