Mazumdar was arrested under Section 144, CrPC after he defied West Bengal government order and tried to visit violence torn areas in Howrah.
The Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government arrested state BJP President Sukanta Mazumdar on Saturday morning. Police stopped Mr. Mazumdar at his residence in New Town while he was about to visit Howrah. They said his visit could worsen law and order in the district. Mazumdar then tried leaving again as they restrained him, leading to a scuffle between them and Mazumdar’s supporters. The police finally arrested Mazumdar at the Vidyasagar setu after his third attempt.
“ They want me to give in writing about my destination. I have consulted with legal experts and have decided not to give any such undertaking. This is my right. We are trying to move the high court,” he said. Mazumdar also accused the police of keeping him under house arrest.
The state government had imposed Sec.144 ,CrPC in various places of Howrah after widespread communal violence there since Thursday. Prohibitory orders will remain in Howrah till 13th June. In places like Uluberia, prohibitory orders will remain till 15th June.Mazumdar had violated the government’s order by trying to visit there, the police say. He was taken to Kolkata Police’s Central Lockup in Lalbazaar. Later BJP activists staged a protest outside demanding his release.
Priyanka Tibrewal Stopped Too, Suvendu Adhikari Protests
The police also stopped Priyanka Tibrewal from visiting violence hit areas in Howrah.
Suvendu Adhikari,BJP MLA and opposition leader, has condemned the move on Twitter.
“I condemn the manner in which @BJP4Bengal President; MP Sri @DrSukantaBJP & Party Secretary; eminent Lawyer Smt @impriyankabjp have been obstructed by WB administration. It’s proof that they are hiding the truth. I am on the way to Balarampur; Purulia to address a public meeting.”
I Adhikari also promised to see the charred BJP Howrah Rural Party Office . I assure our Karyakartas that, our Party office is like a temple to us. It would be rebuilt from the ashes. Look at history, foreign invaders razed our temples to ground but today the saffron flags wave atop, he said.
