362 new cases of Covid were recorded in West Bengal on Sunday and the covid positivity rate in the state touched 3.5%.
The number of new covid cases reached 362 in West Bengal on Sunday. One covid-related death was recorded and the covid positivity rate peaked at 3.5%. A covid positivity rate of 1% and above was recorded in eight districts after the fourth sentinel surveillance.
After about three months for the first time, daily covid cases touched three digits on June 10. On June 10, from 107 cases, the count of fresh cases have risen three times more in just nine days. Only 39 cases were recorded at the beginning of the month and the positivity rate was below 1% till June 5.
In the middle of the third round of the sentinel survey, only Basirhat showed a positivity rate above 1%. The recent surveillance report shows a changed image, it highlights eight districts possessing a positivity rate of more than 1%, with the highest rate of 2.3% being Howrah.
In Kolkata, the positivity rate has taken a high jump from 0.4% to 0.9% which has been recorded in the recent surveillance report. Four samples out of 446 samples tested at the RG Kar Medical College were found positive. In the previous survey, only two out of 450 samples were tested to be positive.
Three districts namely – Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Howrah which showed zero positivity during the previous rounds of the sentinel survey are now among the eight districts with a high positive rate above 1% this time.
The health authorities have ensured maximum protocols to avert the situation and for more than a week, have been urging people to follow all the necessary health precautions such as compulsory masking and washing of hands.
During the extensive three-day survey, 11,031 samples were randomly arranged from patients receiving treatments for other ailments were tested and 79 out of the samples were tested to be positive. In the previous survey, the number of positive samples was only 27 out of 10,999 random samples.
