West Ham with a 3-1 from the first leg started aggressively to assert control. Soucek’s header was narrowly wide from a corner before the club’s new signing Scamacca’s low shot was saved. The opening goal was scored by the 22nd-minute mark when full-back Ben Johnson passed to Soucek. The midfielder’s cross was then slotted home by Scamacca at the near post.
Viborg’s multiple scoring opportunities were wasted when Jay-Roy Grot missed the goal narrowly. Jakob Bonde who scored in London for the club put a free header straight into West Ham’s keeper Alphonse Areola. West Ham dealt with a lot of fire before halftime but fortunately remained unharmed.
Benrahma latched on to Maxwel Cornet’s ball and scored 6 minutes into the second half. At the 63rd minute mark, Soucek put the match to death when he scored from the rebound after Thilo Kehrer’s header was blocked.
Maxwel Cornet almost scored his first goal for Hammers but sent the ball from Benrahma over the empty net. The rest of the match did not see any more goals and West Ham comfortably qualified for another European competition. The club is targetting another good European run this season. They reached the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League last season.
West Ham manager on the victory
“It is a special thing being in Europe and what makes it really special is that you don’t get it very often,” said David Moyes.
“You can sometimes find people who treat it with a bit of disrespect, but I wanted to make sure we treat it with great respect because I want us to try and do well and compete in it. Now we’ve got another period of European football and playing games in places we’ve maybe not done before, so we look forward to it.
“The only way you get in Europe is if you do well in your domestic league, so we’ve done well in our domestic league the last couple of years. That got us in it, and I want to try and do well in it.
“We tried really hard last year and we had a great run in it and now we’ll obviously try and do the same in this competition.”
