UN Chief has to say: According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Russia’s recognition of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions as autonomous violates Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and is a violation of the United Nations Charter’s values.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s formal recognition of rebel territories in eastern Ukraine as sovereign republics follow.
In a statement, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric called for “the peaceful settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, by the Minsk Agreements, as endorsed by the Security Council in resolution 2202 (2015)”.
Furthermore, Guterres views Russia’s decision to be “a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and inconsistent with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” Despite an uptick in shelling in eastern Ukraine by opposing forces, Russian troops are allegedly increasing their presence at the country’s borders.
