Following the incident that unfolded on Oscar night when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after the latter made a joke about his wife.
According to the academy, they allegedly asked Will Smith to leave, but he refused to do so. “Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated,” the statement read. “While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognise we could have handled the situation differently.” In the statement, they also apologised to Rock, the nominees, and spectators.
The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour, and compromising the integrity of the Academy, the statement said, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
During the live broadcast, the presenter, Chris Rock, made a joke about the appearance of Jada Pinkett Smith, who, due to alopecia, has a shaved head. This enraged Smith, as he strode to the stage and slapped Chris Rock. He returned to his seat and yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth.” Shortly after that, Will won the Best Actor trophy for his performance as Richard Williams.
Following widespread criticism from the academy and social media, Will apologised to Rock on Instagram on Monday. “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour or at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.” Oscars co-host Wanda Sykes said Smith’s behaviour made her feel “physically ill.” It was sickening.
