India is in a race to finish in the top four, defeats Bangladesh with a huge margin of 110 runs. India faced Bangladesh in Match 22 of ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Tuesday morning. Yastika Bhatia became the Player of the match with an impressive knock of 50 off 80 at number 3 for India.
Match Summary
IND: 229/7 (50 overs)
BAN: 119 (40.3 overs)
India won the toss and chose to bat first. With tripping quick wickets this morning, Indian batters managed to target 229 in 50 overs with 3 wickets in hand.
The openers Smriti Mandhana (30) and Shefali Verma (42) built a good opening partnership. Whilst Verma, missed her fifty by 8 runs, Yastika Bhatia contributed with a fifty to add up to the total and once again proved to be a dependable number 3 in the team.
Indian skipper Mithali Raj faced a duck on the first ball after Verma’s wicket. The middle-lower order batters Richa Ghosh (26), Pooja Vastrakar (30*) and Sneh Rana (27) played significant knocks of an average of 28 runs.
“Very pleased, I would have liked some more runs to contribute to the team, but very happy with the result. In domestic, I had prepared for Number 3 and it was always in mind that whichever order I get, I’ll have to contribute to the team.
So, the preparation was according to that. Sometimes the wicket is not that good, so singles and strike rotation will be in my mind. It’s my first Man (Player) of the Match in internationals, it means a lot,” said Bhatia in the post-match presentation.
Bangladesh’s Ritu Moni was the most effective bowler with 3/37 bagging three top wickets of Verma, Raj and Bhatia. The story followed similar footsteps or let’s say even worse with Bangladesh giving easy wickets to Indian spinners Rana (4/30), Poonam Yadav (1/25) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1/15). Jhulan Goswami and Pooja Vastrakar scooped 2 wickets each.
This stopped Bangladesh batters from defending themselves from Indian bowlers and going all out in the 41st over while chasing the total.
How can India qualify for the semi-finals?
With three wins out of a total of six matches played; India jumps to the third position in the points table with an advantage of a high net run rate. Australia remains the only team to have qualified for the semi-finals with six wins.
Mithali Raj-led India now has only one match against South Africa to be played on March 27 which is a must-win match for their ease in qualification. If by any chance India loses the match, then they would only hope for South Africa defeating West Indies and England to lose all the remaining matches.
India’s Playing XI: Smriti Mandhana, Shefali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Mithali Raj (c), Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh (wk), Sneh Rana, Pooja Vastrakar, Jhulan Goswami, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav
