“The family had reportedly taken the action because they were in debt and being harassed by moneylenders, according to the letter that was found by the police.”
According to a report from PTI, the Maharashtra Police said on Tuesday that they had detained 13 people, including moneylenders, on allegations of aiding and abetting the suicide of nine family members in the Sangli area.
The deceased were related to each other by their relationship with Manik Vhanmore and Popat Vhanmore, who were brothers. On Monday, the bodies of the brothers, their spouses, their mother, and their children were discovered in their houses, which are located one kilometre away from one another in the town of Mhaisal.
While the remains of six members of the Vhanmore family were discovered at the residence of Manik Vhanmore, only three were discovered at the residence of Popat Vhanmore.
According to a story in The Indian Express, the police found a letter in one of the homes that indicated the family had taken the action because they were in debt and had been subjected to pressure by moneylenders.
According to the report that was published by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Superintendent of Police Dikshit Gedam said that a case has been lodged against 25 individuals from whom the brothers had borrowed money.
“Out of these 25, the police have so far arrested 13 people under Section 306 [abetment of suicide] and Section 341 [wrongful restraint] of the Indian Penal Code, as well as relevant sections of the Maharashtra Money Lending [Regulation] Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe [Prevention of Atrocities] Act,” Gedam said. “The police have also seized relevant documents.”
In addition, he said that “several of the apprehended defendants already have charges against them relating to moneylending.”
Inspector Ajay Sindkar of the Local Crime Branch said that teams have been constituted to apprehend the remaining accused suspects who have evaded capture so far.
According to The Indian Express, Sindkar claimed that the accused individuals were tormenting the brothers on several occasions in public while they were paying the interest on the borrowed money on a consistent basis.
He said that the dead individuals had taken their own lives since the persecution had become intolerable for them.
