3 IAF Officers Sacked Over Accidental Firing of Brahmos Missile into Pakistan
During routine maintenance, a technical malfunction caused an accidental missile launch by India on March 9 that landed in Pakistan, the defense ministry reported on March 11.
In response to the accidental firing of Brahmos Missile incident that occurred on March 9 this year, the central government on Tuesday terminated the services of three Indian Air Force (IAF) officers.
The Indian Air Force said, “Three officers have primarily been held responsible for the BrahMos missile misfiring incident on 9th March 2022.
“A Court of Inquiry, set up to establish the facts of the case, including fixing responsibility for the incident, found that deviation from the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by three officers led to the accidental firing of the missile,” a closure report reads.

“On March 9, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile. The government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident,” the defense ministry had said in a statement.
The Pakistan foreign office had said the “super-sonic flying object” entered into Pakistan from India’s Suratgarh at 6:43 pm (PST) on March 9 and fell to the ground near Mian Channu city at around 6:50 pm, causing damage to civilian property.
A court of inquiry held the IAF officers responsible for deviating from standard operating procedures.
Three officers are primarily responsible. Central government terminates their services immediately.
HT reported on March 23 that human error was likely the cause of the accidental firing.
In an inquiry, the IAF said three officers diverted from the standard operating procedures, resulting in an accidental missile launch.
The government and IAF have taken appropriate action. All in all, It was a serious incident that demanded tough action.
As previously reported, the ‘group captain’ was in charge of the BrahMos supersonic missile battery during routine inspection and maintenance.

Pakistan’s air defense system eventually picked up a flying object at an altitude of 40,000 feet on March 10.
Pakistan said the incident raises questions about security protocols and technical safeguards against accidental or unauthorized missile launches.
