Police were given the information that there was a large crowd gathering around the parking lot on 57th St. and Prospect Avenue. The triple homicide occurred right amid a 28 percent increase in homicides in Kansas City as of 2024. Before this event, the police had investigated around 91 homicides this year compared to the 20 from the same time in 2022.
The mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucus, posted a tweet on Sunday expressing his condolences to the families of those affected. He further stated that overnight around 13 people were shot in the city, including a person slain at a vacation rental. He even questioned why people were gathered in the said parking lot
“If the business knew persons would be present, without security, selling alcohol, and thwarting our laws, that business should be closed,” Lucus tweeted.
Post this another shooting occurred in Michigan as two people died and 12 were hurt at a street party that was promoted on social media platforms. People were also hit by cars as many tried to flee from the shots fired at them. No arrests were made for this case either.
In the last year up to 100 daily deaths were attributed to gun violence along with multiple injuries. Firearm-related suicides and homicides are on a constant rise and the deaths of America’s children due to guns rose to 50% in 2021. In many of the cases, it has become hard for the police to identify or catch the culprit but with such high statistics better methods and safety regulations are being placed.
