The five recently- tagged countries will join Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates around the Security Council’s hand horseshoe table. They will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway, who will vacate their seats at the end of this term.
Five countries have been tagged to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council following a vote in the General Assembly on Thursday. Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland will join the UN body responsible for the conservation of global peace and security, beginning in January 2024. They will be replacing India, Ireland, Kenya, Norway and Mexico.
They will be joining in as the new 5 non-permanent members in the United Nations Security Council for the period of 2 years.They will start their term from 1st January 2024. The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, blazed the results.
The Campaigning was low-key, without the traditional big events candidate countries promoted themselves ,and the upcoming threat of COVID-19 waves also discouraged occurrence of big events.
“In the last few months, all U.N. diplomatic business has been overshadowed by the war in Ukraine, which I think was another obstacle to any really high-profile campaigning,” said Richard Gowan, U.N. director for the International Crisis Group and a long-time UN watcher.
“That conflict is likely to remain atop the council’s agenda going into the new year when the five begin their terms. The hard part will obviously be to work out what they can do in a Security Council where the big powers are deeply divided over Ukraine,” Gowan said.
Out Of the new members, Japan has the most experience, serving 11 terms, according to the Security Council Report. Switzerland — which only joined the United Nations in 2002 — and Mozambique, have never held any council seats.
The council deals with the conservation of transnational peace and security, and holds the authority to borrow fairly binding judgments , emplace peacekeeping operations and put warrants.
The Security Council Members
The Security Council consists of 15 countries. Five of them – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – are endless members with the right to blackball.
The General Assembly, which comprises all 193 UN Member States, elects the 10 non-permanent members who serve for two- time terms.
To secure a place on the Council, countries must admit a two- thirds maturity, or 128 votes, indeed if they run uncontested.
Campaigners this time fought for five seats under three indigenous groups two for African and Asia- Pacific countries, one for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two for Western Europe and other States
Tallying The Vote
Overall, 192 UN Member States shared in the election. Ballot papers listed the names of all countries submitted at least 48 hours before the vote. fresh blank lines corresponding to the number of vacant seats were also handed for including any other names.
The five new non-permanent members ran largely uncontested.
In the African and Asia- Pacific group, Mozambique entered 192 votes, marking its first time serving on the Council. Japan garnered 184 votes, and Mongolia three.
Ecuador, the sole seeker from Latin America and the Caribbean, attained 190 votes, with two countries abstaining.
Switzerland will also be a freshman to the Council. The country entered 187 votes, and Malta 185 votes, again with two countries abstaining
