The best way to stay up to speed with this ongoing pandemic is to –Accept, Adapt and Advance.
The whole world went into lockdown at the beginning of 2020. Humanity as a whole took a turn that year. The world changed drastically; masks and sanitisers were the new trends. Who knew that even breathing without a barrier in the open would become a novelty. And when the lockdown ended, and some of the restrictions lessened and people “moved on”, there were many who couldn’t cope, couldn’t accept the change.
Accept. Adapt. Advance.
This mantra has become a lifeline now. The sooner people adopt it, the better for their health. Let’s look at these seven steps which may still help you in these gruelling times:
1. Habitualize on pandemic
Hobby, by definition, is some activity or a way to pass time that makes a person feel relaxed. What better way to distract the mind than to focus on relaxing and fun in these pandemic times?
Having a hobby that can be beneficial to you or add to your skill-set or improve your health is a plus. Still, it can be anything – a drive around town, painting, sketching, listening to music, listening to podcasts or even just going to a park, sitting on a bench and observing the world around you.
According to experts, listening to music or podcasts on positivity can help alleviate evil thoughts and act as great stress-relievers. Also, it is proven that reconnecting with the environment and nature by taking walks or going to a beach or on a trek can be very rejuvenating.
Of course, with the pandemic and the travelling restrictions in place, it could even be a walk in the neighbourhood park.
2. Rest your eyes during pandemic
Since the lock down, the amount of screen time on average has increased. It can be detrimental to one’s eyesight. Not only that, it can be a cause for frequent headaches and migraines and sitting for long hours at the laptop or a computer can even lead to pain in the back, neck and shoulder.
To avoid those, try to reduce or better manage your screen time.
Wear protective screen glasses in the case where you have to sit for long hours on the laptop. Give your eyes rest at intervals. Get up and look outside the window or close them for a few minutes. It helps in pandemic times.
3. Talk with close ones
Isolating oneself can be disadvantageous to one’s mental health. It is understandable if the reason is that a person is diagnosed as positive or if they live alone because of work.
In that case, instead of submerging oneself with series, movies, social media or work, call up a friend or a relative or a close person.
Communicate to them the need to talk even trivial things like what was for lunch. Talking to a close and dear one plays a significant role in keeping a sane mind. It can prevent a person from spiralling into the dark abyss of mental illness.
4. Exercise
It is a proven fact that exercising does not only enhance one’s health but also increases longevity. It keeps the heart healthy and maintains insulin levels. It also releases endorphins, the human body’s “happy hormone”, to reduce anxiety and stress levels.
Yoga and meditation are, without doubt, the best forms of exercising, both for the body and mind. ‘Kapalbhati’ is an excellent form of yoga in maintaining a healthy and clean airway and lungs, which is, in current times, a necessity.
Besides, having yoga included in one’s daily routine can also help maintain other body functions like digestion, sleep cycle, a healthy mind and heart. Incorporating even a 30-minute daily session of meditation can help immensely in pandemic times.
5. Eat well, sleep well in pandemic
Eating a healthy and balanced diet is very important for a healthy lifestyle. It can deter unwanted chronic diseases and increase the life span. Your body cooperates with you only when you do the same. And like every living thing, our body, too, needs rest. Proper sleep in a daily routine to recharge the mind and body is significant.
6. Learn new things on pandemic
It is only natural to get bored of a monotonous life, especially these times. A person needs to bring change in it, however small it is, to make one’s life more joyful and lively. To do that, always try new things, not to become an expert, but to learn it, so your mind remains sharp.
Trying new things, swimming, learning to play a musical instrument, or even a new language never gets outdated. There is no age for learning new things so that nothing can stop you in this endeavor except you.
7. Take precautions
And last but not least, adapt to the newness of this world. In 2020, the world went into a lockdown amidst the threat of a tiny but deadly microorganism. When it came out of it, everything changed. Adapt to this new world, accept the changes and then advance to make the world a safe place again.
Always wear a mask (correctly) when you go out. Wash your hands after returning from outside. Use sanitisers. And maintain social distancing as much as possible. Because even though there are vaccines available now and medical science have finally broken through on the “How’s” of tackling this virus, precaution is still better than cure.
