Manipur Landslide occurred leading to 8 dead, over 70 missing at Rail Project site in Noney, PM assures all help.
Eight people were killed and over 70 others are missing after a massive landslide occurred at the railway construction site in Western Manipur’s Noney district on Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday night at 107 Territorial Army Camp Tupul Yard railway construction camp. Eight bodies have been retrieved so far, including seven Territorial Army Personnel, PTI reported.
Rescue operations are still on to find the 70 missings, of which some are TA jawans.
The residents were asked to stay alert for continuous rain, which may aggravate the situation. People living in downstream areas have been asked to evacuate due as there is a possibility of a breach in the dam.
The massive debris has blocked the River ljei, creating a reservoir that may inundate low-lying areas.
Travelers are advised to avoid National Highway 37 due to multiple road blockages.
Indian Army issued a statement, “Troops of Indian Assam Rifles and Territorial Army continued the rescue operations throughout the day in general area Tupul railway station, Noney district, Manipur in spite of inclement weather. Teams of Indian railways, civil administration, NDRF, SDRF, and locals of Noney district are also actively contributing to the search.”
Officials said that the search operations will continue through the night. Engineering equipment, including bulldozers, has been pressed into service for creating access to the incident site and helping in the rescue efforts.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister spoke over the incident to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishaw.
Shah said, that a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already reached the landslide site while two more teams will reach there soon.
The CM has called an emergency meeting to resolve the situation. He also visited the site of the massive landslide.
