A day after Nitish Kumar broke his alliance with the NDA, he took oath as the chief minister of the Mahagathbandhan. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav took oath as the deputy chief minister. The cabinet expansion is likely to take place after August 15.
After the swearing-in, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi greeted each other and Tejashwi went to touch the former’s feet to seek blessings. And he addressed “BJP can say what they want, I won’t live in 2014”
Freshly-appointed Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Friday said that the JD(U) had collectively decided to exit the alliance with the BJP. “The party made the decision together (to leave BJP) …whether I will stay or not (till 2024) …they can say what they want, but I will not live in the year 2014,” he told the news agency ANI.
“I came here to meet Governor and gave my resignation. There are 7 parties including 164 MLAs along with Independents in Mahagathbandahan,” Nitish said to the media after the second governor meeting
After ending the alliance with NDA, he announces a New “GRAND ALLIANCE” with the support of 164 MLAs, today at 2 pm he made his “SHAPTHGRAHA” In the Raj Bhavan. Along with Tejaswi Yadav also made his “SHAPTHGRAHA” as Deputy CM. After the second meeting with Governor, Nitish Kumar allied with 7 Parties including RJD

What is “Mahagathbandhan” (Grand Alliance)

On 14 April 2015, the RJD, Janata Dal (United), Janata Dal (Secular), the Indian National Lok Dal, Samajwadi Party, and Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) announced that they would merge into a new national Janata Parivar alliance to oppose the BJP, thus breaking their long time alliance with the INC.This would give the alliance 14 Lok Sabha seats and 30 Rajya Sabha seats.
On 7 May 2015, the RJD expelled Rajesh Ranjan for six years due to anti-RJD activities after speculation rose that he might join the Biju Janata Dal for the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly election but he formed a new party called Jan Adhikar Party.
In November 2015, RJD won the elections as the party became the single largest party with 80 followed by Janata Dal (United) with 71 seats, BJP with 53 seats, and Congress with 27 seats. In terms of vote share, BJP came first with 24.4%, followed by RJD with 18.4% and JD (U) with 16.8% and Congress got 6.7%. Janata Dal (United)’s Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister and Lalu’s son Tejaswi Yadav became the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.
In July 2017, following the corruption cases against Tejashwi Yadav, Nitish Kumar asked Yadav to resign from the cabinet, which was refused by RJD. To protect his clean image from corruption, Nitish Kumar resigned on 26 July 2017, ending RJD’s stake in the Bihar government. What followed next was a coalition between BJP and JDU as a result Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister again whereas Sushil Modi, a prominent BJP leader became the deputy Chief minister.
The ‘alliance between Indian National Congress and the RJD has factored in October 2021. When Tejaswi gave tickets to candidates in Bihar By-elections, where Congress was fixed to stand candidates.
WHY MR. KUMAR WANTED TO OUT OF NDA AT 2 TIMES
JD(U) broke its 17 years old alliance with the BJP in Bihar in protest against the elevation of Narendra Modi ahead of the election campaign committee of the BJP for the 2014 Indian general election. JD(U) President Sharad Yadav and then Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced their end of the coalition at a press conference on 16 June 2013, exactly a week after Narendra Modi was made the BJP’s campaign committee chairman, who was later made the prime ministerial candidate of NDA. Just after this split, Sharad Yadav relinquished his position as the NDA convenor.
The JD(U) contested the election in Bihar in an alliance with the Communist Party of India but they won only two seats out of a total of forty seats in Bihar while the BJP-LJP alliance won 31 seats. Following a poor performance in the election, Nitish Kumar resigned as Chief Minister of Bihar, and Jitan Ram Manjhi was sworn in as a new Chief Minister. When the trust vote was demanded by the BJP to prove a majority in Bihar Legislative Assembly, the RJD supported the JD(U) in the assembly on 23 May 2014 to pass the majority mark.
Alliance with NDA
On 26 July 2017 at 5 pm, Nitish Kumar tendered his resignation as Chief Minister of Bihar, ending 20-month-old Mahgathbandhan (grand alliance) rule. The next day on 27 July 2017 at 10 am he again took oath as Chief Minister of Bihar with the support of the BJP. The same day evening, Kerala JD(U) chief M.P. Virendra Kumar announced the split of the Kerala unit of the JD(U) from the party, due to Nitish Kumar-led Bihar unit joining hands with the BJP. On 28 July 2017, the new NDA government won the trust vote in the Bihar assembly by 131 votes in favor and 108 against, four legislators did not vote.
SUPPORT OF “Mahagathbandhan” GRAND ALLIANCE
The RJD has the highest number of MLAs and will have 16 ministers whereas the JD(U) will have 13 ministers in the cabinet.
Congress and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) will have four and one ministers each. A total of 35 MLAs will take oath as ministers eventually.
Tejaswi Yadav attacked the BJP and said the saffron party does not have any alliance partners across the Hindi heartland. Yadav also accused the BJP of trying to destroy parties with whom it forms alliances.
Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Phagu Chauhan and a list of 164 MLAs. The Bihar state Assembly has 242 seats and the halfway mark is 122.
“It was decided at the party meeting that we quit the NDA. I have, therefore, resigned as the NDA’s chief minister,” Kumar said after tendering his resignation as the CM.
Currently, the BJP has 77 seats in the Bihar Assembly. RJD has 77 seats, JD(U) 45, Congress 19, and the Left led by CPIML(L) 16.
JD(U) also has the support of four MLAs belonging to former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM and an independent. JD(U) is the third major alliance partner to leave the NDA in three years after Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Shiv Sena.
